Michael tweeted yesterday that he has auditioned for the role of Peter Quill in "Guardians of the Galaxy." This would be huge for him & tweeting about it indicates how much he wants it; instantly, the 'net was abuzz with a lot of approving responses. It's the kind of role he could knock out of the park so my fingers are crossed hard for him

Absolutely. I would think because of his connection to James Gunn he would play it close to his vest since he doesn't want to make his friend have to turn him down. I wonder how much rein the studio is giving Gunn.
And that's a hot picture of Mikey! Looking real good.

I wondered if JG might have given him the go ahead to tweet about it, in order to show the studio a positive fan response (which he got.) But someone also theorized that MR might have tweeted as a favour to JG & the studio: if there's a buzz around candidates beyond JGL, then JGL might settle for a lower price. And MR might be rewarded with a role. (Probably too convoluted.)
It's likely a long shot but I so hope he gets it. JGL's amazing but he's already Batman for heck's sake. And Mikey is better than ZL or John K.

Way too convoluted. And I think JGL is just a rumor. Because of TDKR people think he wants to continue the superhero realm but really it was the opportunity to continue working with Christopher Nolan, not being part of the superhero mythos. I really don't think it's something he's really interested in.
And even if an actor did reduce their quote, they'll usually do a deal to make it up on the backend and that could end up costing the studio more in the long run if the film is profitable.
