Les Miserables

If you've known me for a while, you're likely aware that one of my first loves was the musical Les Miserables. I was your average ~14-year-old fan; I had the show more or less memorized, saw every adaptation I could find, read (but mercifully did not write) blatant Mary Sue fic... hell, I even had a stereotypically 90's website, though mercifully ( Read more... )

les miserables, ah nostalgia

We've discussed that I'm also a fan, yes?

My heart weeps at the casting possibilities. Frankly, I would rather see Jason Segal and NPH in the roles. http://youtu.be/EhXsJjVdj1E

Nobody will ever be as good as Terrance Mann, but there *have* to be better vocal choices out there.

I realize that they're worried about making the movie "bankable" with mainstream audiences, but frankly I think they'd have more success with it if they cast unknowns in the roles instead.

Even if they aren't passionate fans of the musical, regular moviegoers are going to notice if the singers aren't on their game.

Of course, they could surprise us. Uh, somehow.

That video, god, that will never not be hilarious.

Oh, golly. I'm a huge RC fan, and I love his music (within its rather limited context), but wow. He has a very quiet voice -- a "small" voice -- yummy texture and decent tone. But no volume. None. What on earth is he going to do with those huge, soaring passages? I know it's all done in the studio, and they can work all kinds of magic there... but still. Woah. Gotta wonder.

See? This is my problem. It's the same with Helena Bonham Carter. Her voice is pretty enough, but it's airy and light and everything that somebody as brash and loud and offensive as Mrs. Lovett and Madame Thénardier aren't.

It's not that the guy can't sing, it's that Javert's voice needs power.

Bah. I guess we'll see. :/

THIS x10000000000000. I could weep thinking about how Crowe will handle "Stars." I suppose I should feel glad he can passably carry a tune, but he's going to need some real vocal training to learn to hold those Javert's notes and hopefully drop the whiny twang. Well, I guess it could be worse? :-\

I like Jackman, but still don't buy him as Valjean. Rush would make an amusing Thenardier, but HBC's voice is so weak, I can't even.

I... I don't have a Javert icon. This will not do. This will not do at all.

Have some space instead? Gah, there aren't even any stars, goddamn it.

I really, truly hope Crowe decides to partake in some serious vocal training before taking this on. The only small comfort, I suppose, is that unlike the musical it isn't going to be entirely sung -- he should handle the straight acting components well enough.

I've heard other performances that omitted the country twang. Here's hoping.

There's just something too... handsome about Hugh Jackman to play Valjean. Even when he's playing a particularly scruffy character, like Wolverine, I still can't seem to make that mental leap. Whatever you thought of the 1998 movie, Liam Neeson fit. Jackman just... doesn't ( ... )
