So, tomorrow I'm going to that symposium at Harvard on cultural transfer in the early medieval Mediterranean. It should be interesting! Also, erstwhile advisor A is supposed to be there, although I'll only believe it when I see it. Wow, I am weirded out by the idea of using Facebook to network with senior scholars. Scary!!! (I have a few senior scholars friended on FB, but I never communicate with them that way--it's too confusingly different from real-life interactions.)

On the other hand, I love the fact that you will be at Harvard tomorrow. So, while I'm locked in my room grading papers, I will know that I have an LJ flistie a few blocks away.

I hope your grading is going well! I have a week's lull now before my students have their exam next Saturday, at which point everything will go crazy for a few days.

As for Facebook, yes! Facebook isn't about networking to me, and I don't want that to change. I think people are joining now (like my advisor) with an eye to the networking possibilities, but that's actually kind of an intrusion on how I use facebook, which is informally, to talk to my friends. I still carefully consider who's reading when I post anything because it's the internet and semi-public, but that's still different from the way I'd interact in a professional context, which I very much don't want facebook to become.

Yes, me too! It's like, facebook knows it has us now, and it's not taking the high road with that knowledge. It's using it to be as evil as it can. GRR ( ... )
