man, I kind of had the same sense of "is this real" but I attributed to it reminding me a lot of dark!fic. Doesn't it just feel like dark fic? Like you'll read the story, and then put it down, and go back to canon and think, "what an interesting take on how things could go bad"

Nail on the head! It was totally like a dark!fic. I wanted to go back to canon... and probably would have enjoyed the story more if it had been fic.

Yeah. I agree. I enjoyed it, but...I haven't really had the heart to continue the series since reading it.

Ahhhhh... I understand that impulse/decision. The book is a real pivot or divergence from the happy canon established and I understand your reluctance to go down the rabbit hole and see where he's going.

However, I fully intend to do so - shall I let you know if its worth it? or have other friends already mentioned?
