Not so much a review as a 'really?'

I tried two of James Patterson's books this holiday: Maximum Ride - the Angel Experiment, and Witch Wizard.

You know what bugs the life out of me re: Mr. Patterson? The TV ads for his books where he's onscreen talking about what a FREAKING FABULOUS book it is. Every time, I think, "Ummm... how about you let ME make that decision, huh? I really don't need you crowing about you awesome you are, all over my TV, bucko."

Really? Well thank goodness I am spared that. I am reluctant to try his other books now, as these left a bad taste as it were.

I am now certain of it - fanfic has ruined me for badly written fiction.

Me too!

Yeah, especially when I run into a book that has my pet peeve I think: You get paid for this book and can't even keep your POVs straight for one paragraph? *argh*

I know right!! It seems like such a basic 'good' writing thing and them 'whamo'! ... you'd like the publisher/editor would pick it up!

I have become a literary snob via amateur fanfiction

Me, too. Weird how that happens.

So true! I just finished reading a book and couldn't help but think that I'd read better fic online :(
However, it does totally show the amazing amount of talent out in the fandoms :)

Oh yes, I agree. The world of fanfic truly has some awesomely talented writers out there. Alas though for the professional world...

i so agree- we had to read one for book club- and i couldn't believe the change from early books like Along came a spider- such short chapters, unbelievable coincidences. i shan't read him again. We also read a so called 'medieval' book by Candace Robb- she's now become our benchmark for dire writing. the book was more like a teenage romance fanfic only with better spelling...how do they publish more than one book by these people? It's like fanifc that gets 100's of hits despite poor grammar and spell checking and other fic gets 50 hits....(rant over)!

I completely and utterly concur with your rant. I suspect its only going to get worse as professional writers try to churn out more and more stories to meet the 'ADD' attention span they think readers have.
