What's in a Name?

Apr 13, 2008 11:49

I'm going to place this question behind a cut because while MANY of the things I'm pointing out are from past episodes... this particular 'trend' came up in last night's episode as well.

I want to see what everyone's opinion is...

You could be onto something. They have used the hidden name thing a good little bit, enough that even last night I was hoping the young girl would actually name him.

And I always found the conversation between the Doctor and the Master interesting because they talk of their choice of names. Makes me wonder.

I don't think it was a requirement to be a Time Lord to use a pseudonym. LOL

Romana just went by Romana... not The Token Female Time Lordess. LOL

Very true! LOL, it might be in the Time Lord handbook "Picking a name, the more mystery the better."

And didn't Romana go by Romana II after her regeneration? Or was that just how they (fans/writers) referred to her?

*grumble* I hate shows that make me think! LOL, just kidding I freaking love it.

That's just how fans referred to her, the same way fans refer to the various regenerations of the Doctor by number. He always just calls himself the Doctor no matter what regeneration he's in, and the same goes for Romana.

Oooh I completely forgot to put the thing about planets being 'lost' in my reaction post! It does seem a bit odd - another planet being 'lost'. I wonder if that'll link in with the finale?

And yay for the Rose mention!

The name thing I agree with as well. It's always been a big deal, but they're really making it seem as if something HUGE will happen when it's revealed now.

Oooeerr...

I always giggle when I hear "Theta". It's a math symbol, used in trig, and always an 'unknown'.

So essentially, by calling the doctor "Theta" You are calling him "the unknown quantity". To which I always giggle.

Though you have brought up a number of interesting references to the Doctors name (or lack thereof) in recent episodes I don't think it really means anything. From what I recall of watching classic Who when I was a kid, this is a theme that has been occurring since the beginning of the show (companions and other characters making comments about his name). So I don't think this is anything new to the show and therefor I do not believe it is an indication of any "theme" for this season or even the new series.
In all honesty I don't think they will ever reveal the Doctors true name. It has been a secret, something alluded to but nothing more, for so long...frankly I'm not even sure if they actually have a name for him. I would love to be wrong but I just don't think there was ever a plan to tell us his true name.

Makes me think of MacGyver.. he was always MacGyver... never used his first name. And they only revealed it once (maybe twice, not sure).

But really... if you were named Angus, would you let it get around?

Oh, MacGyver. I used to think it was just in the finale that he let slip the name, but a friend of mine pointed out that in the episode where Mac dreams he's gone back to Camelot, his name is mentioned, as it's the same name as his ancestor there, or something. (Been a few years since I saw it.)

So twice! :D

Though I think Angus is a lovely name. :P
