I'm going to place this question behind a cut because while MANY of the things I'm pointing out are from past episodes... this particular 'trend' came up in last night's episode as well.
I want to see what everyone's opinion is...
In reading some of the posts, I've seen where people have pointed out some trends as of late.
The obvious is the mention of Rose.
Then there are the mentions of different planets who have died because of the 'War' and the Doctor is now again dealing with the consequences...
But because I've been trying to 'catch' up on episodes I've missed, I think I'm seeing this trend more readily. And it's one that goes back to Series One with Chris.
His name.
Rose asked him his name in Rose, and he just answers the Doctor... this happens ALOT, of course. Resulting in the running joke.. ."Doctor? Doctor Who?.
But, it's more than that.
The Girl in the Fireplace, Reinette says his name is "More than just a secret".
Last season, in The Shakespeare Code, the Carrionites? (Forgive me, I'm going on memory and my transcript resource hasn't transcribed this episode yet) use the power of words as magic.
The Doctor is the first one to mention it when he 'names' the witch in Peter Street's cell, and he tells Martha that it's the oldest and strongest magic - the power of an name.
When he faces the Carrionite, the youngest one puts Martha to sleep by using her name. She tries to 'get to' him by using the name Rose, and he says that was a mistake because THAT name makes him fight. But, she also says he hides his name.
And in The Sound of Drums and The Last Timelord, the Doctor and the Master talk about choosing their names. The Doctor CHOSE to be called the Doctor, rather than his name. And the Master is the same. They choose not to be known by their own names, but why?
Then, last night, the Soothsayers could tell the Doctor many things... about Galifrey, and the infamous "She is returning", but they could not see his name. Again... hidden... BIG fat hairy secret.
I know there are other instances, but these are the ones that really stand out. BIG time stand out.
We've heard the name Theta Sigma being given to the Doctor - but that is a nick name given to him in the Academy per canon - that isn't his given name.
I'm thinking that when and if his TRUE name is revealed, something HUGE is going to happen. BIG TIME HUGE!
Can't speculate as to what... but what does everyone thing of my theory?
