It is worse than Disney romance as they are shoving rather than story telling. Anyway. I sometimes have no idea why a show can hurt its core fans so much. (and these fans started love Arthur and Merlin and their destiny ever since Season 1 and after all these years, they still stikc with it even it hurt so much).
Hi there :) I dont get it either tbh given that the A/M relationship and the chemistry between the actors is what makes the show stand out from the herd. I'm pretty new to it though so I dont know the politics around the various seasons but Ive been told the producers pretty much panicked after the first season and the suggestions that M and A were 'close'? :p They certainly seemed to be terrified since then of suggesting emotional closeness between A and M without whacking the audience over the head frantically with A/G's epicness to overwhelm it. But as you say the A & G thing is as realistic as the Disney take on Cinderella. :(
I think Disney Cinderella is WAY BETTER than A/G stuff. That's how pathetic the A/G stuff is. I like romance and I try really hard to like A/G but with their story telling and stupid lines here and there, the result is that I despise it without any hesitation.
Can I start off by saying that "Arthur and Gwen - Terry and June with Less Sexual Tension" is possibly one of my favourite things on or off the show I've heard all season.
It has been a bit of a mess since episode 8 hasnt it. Although I liked episode 10, looking at the last 4 episodes as a collection it's a mix of disjointed, mundane and confusing crap. I think you're right and when the show moves the primary focus onto the Gwen/Arthur relationship, it all goes to hell. Nothing quite works, nothing quite makes sense.
They were doing marvelously having this build up where Merlin and Arthur are developing, both together, and seperately in their roles and Morgana is slowly building up to another overtake and you've get secrets and lies going on in all those dynamics. Then, it was like they hat to fill their Gwen/Arthur 'quota' for the season, so halted the interesting narrative and replaced it with the dullest relationship on earth (plus killing off lovely Lancelot as an added cherry on top!)
Hi Bee :) As you can see I realised I had to stop spamming your journal & find someplace else to rant :p Yeah I think 4.10 is about the only thing we've disagreed on - I didn't hate it at all, I loved the concept of exploring Arthurs complicity in Uthers regime, but I found the A/M stuff just horrible. But it wasnt nearly as bad as 4.09 (pass the smelling salts nurse!) or this last one which was just.... I wont start again. :p
( ... )
I just want to quote all of this back to you because YES, THIS. All of it. I wish the producers of the show could read this because i thinl you've eloquently summed up so many fans' frustrations with what they're doing to this series. It started so promisingly and has fallen so far with their Arthur/Gwen obsession and the manufactured obstacles (while, as you say, conveniently removing the real obstacle). I could have liked Gwen if she'd stayed the girl next door that Arthur grew to love bit the development of their romance has been so unconvjncing with the way we're constantly told how wonderful she is. And Merlin, reduced to a bit part in his own destiny, a servant while Gwen becomes a queen and unforgivably, being fine with that. It makes me sad and cross and I fear for the finale and the future of the show.
Hi there! And thanks :) 'Reduced to a bit part in his own destiny'- what a brilliant way to describe it. It makes me sad too and I admit my confidence in the way they're taking the show is low right now. The finale this year, I have no real expectations for- from the spoilers it seems to me they're rerunning the S3 finale with a few add ons - Heroic Returning Gwen of course and Excalibur instead of the Round Table. It really pisses me off though that they're posturing as 'taking the show home to the legend' after what they did in 4.09. :(
Ah... maybe they'll amaze us with their lack of predictability. Perhaps. :p
Dear, Bradley said it in US Comic Com when they finished 409 but he had no idea about 410 to 413 at that moment. 4.11 is a Mary Sue piece to childish damsels in distriss, imagining a perfect guy will revolve around and can not live with them.
It must be a "wonder" that the producers can allow themselves to humiliate the Iconic Once and Future King to this level. I don't know how Colin and Bradley can handle some of the lines in this episode.
Really? After 4.09? So he knew they'd killed off Lancelot again? Though come to think of it 4.09 must have been planned when they sent Lancelot over the veil so he must have known what they planned for the G/L/A legend. And he still said that. Thats fascinating.
