Title: Piano at the Courtyard (Chapter 3)
Pairings: Seohyun/Kyuhyun
Ratings: PG
Summary: Seohyun is introduced to her new group of friends.

Seohyun tilted her head, looking down at her palms splayed on her lap. With her hands neatly crossed, and her legs placed at the perfect demure lady position she was taught since young, she sat up straight on her chair, nodding her head humbly at every sentence her mother makes. She sighed inwardly; she knew it was her fault today, but she didn't really want it to happen.

Seohyun's mum paced the room, slightly nervous. She was strict with her daughter, that she was indeed, but it was all done to protect her. Being 10 minutes late wasn't something Seohyun would have done. She knew that her mum would not have condoned that. As she turned around to gaze at her daughter's face, she got a shock, as Seohyun seemed to be unfocused on the 'scolding' she was lecturing.

"Seohyun, are you okay? You look very pale today. Perhaps you want to take a rest now?" Her mum enquired concernedly, placing a hand on her daughter's forehead. Seohyun smiled tiredly, shaking her head gently. She stood up and hugged her mother, expressing her apology and gratitude all mixed into one in that hug. Her mum patted her head, sighing as she wrapped her arms around Seohyun. "Seohyun is still so young, I don't want her to get corrupted or tainted by society, by societal ills. I just want her to grow up in a pristine and clean environment, freed of everything I don't want her to be associated with." Seohyun's mum thought silently to herself, as she carefully led Seohyun to her bed and tucked her in properly.

"Sleep now. I will wake you up in time for dinner later." The adult smiled, taking one last look at her daughter before slowly closing the door behind her.

Seohyun stared at the door, unable to close her eyes to go rest. This day had just seemed impossible; in fact, it was impossible. Never had she made a friend within one day, but she just felt safe and secure in her new school now; never had she felt so happy and contented to mix around with some classmates, just playing around and talking about anything in the world. And the most important thing of all, to now get mixed with a group of gangsters, who were now against her and were willing to resort to underhand methods just to make her life miserable. Thinking of what had nearly happened just now at the field sent shivers down Seohyun's spine. She wished that she could tell her mother everything that had just happened, or just unburden her sorrows and troubles to someone who wasn't involved in this at all. She shut her eyes furiously, shaking her head side to side, trying to clear her mind of that agonizing and frightening memory, forgetting what Hyun-ah had said when she left them alone.

---------------------

Yoona stepped into her house, feeling weary all of a sudden. Thinking on the day's events, she had -never once expected that Hyun-ah would come back to school all of a sudden, and the past memories flooded her mind for the first time since that afternoon. She gasped, as she writhed with the pain of remembering those cruel and torturous times again. She ran to her room before the butler could ask her what was wrong, slamming the door in the way. She slumped down against the door, with tears rapidly making their way down her face. Yoona sobbed quietly against the door, covering her mouth in an attempt to muffle the sounds that she was making. Those times were really the hardest, and she would never want someone to go through all of it again She couldn't imagine what would have happened to Seohyun if Kyuhyun hadn't called her urgently and asked her to run to the field immediately. Fortunately, she was in time and had managed to stop Hyun-ah. But she didn't know if she could do this every single time, when she was this wearied and troubled herself. Yoona drew her legs in and tucked her chin into the gap between her body and her legs, releasing all her emotions in one go.

----The next day----
Yoona took her first step into the class, plastering a smile on her face as she saw Seohyun already sitting at her desk. She breathed in a sigh of relief; at least she hasn't tried anything funny yet. She sat down beside Seohyun and took her books out one by one, noticing how Seohyun seemed to have suddenly stiffened. She turned her head around, curiosity evident in her face, just to see Seohyun staring at a site outside of the window. Yoona frowned, as she waved her hands in front of Seohyun to reclaim her attention. Seohyun hurriedly shook out of her trance and turned around, greeting Yoona cheerfully.

"Seohyun…..are you not angry that I have now dragged you into this mess?" Yoona breathed, not wanting to know Seohyun's answer, but she knew she had to ask, at least, she had to get this off her chest so that she could sleep throughout the night, unlike the last night, where she spent it all tossing and turning, trying to ignore those painful memories that find every gap or crook just to invade her mind, filling her brain with all those sights that she tried so hard to forget, even with the help of her psychologist.

Seohyun looked over, frowning slightly. Yoona's heart sank.

"Of course not! Where did you even get that idea from? I guess it's partially my fault, standing there and acting so silly at that moment. I probably should have tried clearing it up immediately….Yoona, why are your eyes slightly swollen and red? Have you….have you been crying?" Seohyun quickly raised her hands to massage Yoona's cheeks, soothing the puffiness that was clearly shown on Yoona's face.

Yoona drew her face back slightly, surprised at the sudden gesture. She had always thought that Seohyun needed time to get used to her and integrate into her circle of friends; but it seemed like she had adapted quickly. "Perhaps I worry and fret too much….she isn't me after all….she will be fine" Yoona tried to reassure herself in the confines of her mind. She grasped Seohyun's hands tightly, silently transmitting her thanks through her eyes. "Seohyun ah, why do you seem so innocent at times? Hyun-ah will find a way to deal with you, even if you weren't there when Kyuhyun threw that stone. She is declaring war against you, in order to get back at me." Yoona thought, tilting her head to the side to avoid her desk mate's gaze.

Seohyun smiled carefully, before patting Yoona's face. Somehow, she had sense that Yoona did not want to share her past experiences yet. "They must be so painful….she still holds flashbacks and shadows still seemed to reign in her heart" Seohyun sighed, swinging her head around to absorb her surroundings. Most of her classmates were already present and were waiting for the first period to start. Seohyun stared at the empty seat right behind her, frowning in concentration as she tried to remember the person. She whirled around to face the front again, pondering.

"Kyuhyun's missing again, isn't he?"

------------------
Taeyeon bounced into the class, with her bag thrown across Yoona's table, forgotten. Yoon had left promptly right after the last lesson, dashing out of the room while leaving behind a note for Seohyun, asking her to stay for about 5 minutes in the classroom without leaving, before Taeyeon came to get her. Taeyeon smiled down at Seohyun, who glanced up with a slightly questioning face. Taeyeon stuck her tongue out, and pulled Seohyun out of her chair, and right out of the classroom, leaving the latter bewildered.

Taeyeon practically dragged the female junior into a room where Seohyun didn't know this part of the school existed. She glanced around the room, noticing 4 other girls of approximately the same age as her, sitting at the same corner of the room, urgently discussing. They had stopped immediately once Taeyeon announced their presence in the room, gazes turning and scrutinizing Seohyun, making her feel a little discomfited. Taeyeon cleared her throat, smiling widely at both parties, before pulling Seohyun closer.

"Seohyun! This is Sooyoung," as the girl on the most right lifted a hand in acknowledgement, accompanied with a wide smile. She wore a short hairstyle that hung closely to her face, defining and making her jaw line even more prominent, like a talented sculptor had moulded his final perfection out of the clay. "She's kind of like the secretary in our group, collating every single piece of information and analyzing it. And that's Tiffany." Tiffany gazed at Seohyun, looking her up and down before smiling tentatively, turning back to her handphone to continue sms-ing. Taeyeon quickly added, "Tiffany is the one that gets all the messages. Every single piece of information passes through her, and she relays all the information to us. You want information? Feel free to ask anything from her. I guarantee that she can find it for you within a minute." Tiffany stuck her tongue out adorably at Taeyeon, unable to hide the smile that was spreading across her face. Taeyeon looked on approvingly, as Tiffany quickly ducked her head down. The person sitting on Tiffany's left threw her head back and laughed out loud, her laughter infectious and reverberating throughout the empty room. "That's Sunny, her name fits her." Sunny grinned, jumping up and giving Seohyun a hug before settling down on her chair. "She's the social director of our group, as you can probably already see why. And the reason why we need a social director? We don't really want to get into trouble with any other people in the school, with what we already have on our hands." Taeyeon sighed.

The last girl stood right beside the window, turning around to fill the room with a cold aura. Her eyes raked up and down Seohyun's body, taking into account every single factor, the analysis clearly evident in her gaze. She nodded once, before taking the chair right before her. "Hyun-ah's preference is getting better. This one is definitely worth the fight." She stated clearly, as Sunny pushed her playfully on the shoulder, earning a mock glare. "That's Jessica, also one of the daughters of an underground triad. Jessica, Yoona and I were childhood friends, as our families are always together, looking out for each other, and you can see why we are so close now. The other 3 here," as Taeyeon gestured to the others, "were also once victims of such bullies, and have now joined us in protecting other students." Sooyoung stood up slowly, placing a hand on Seohyun's shoulder, giving her moral support.

"You…three….were bullied as well?" Seohyun stuttered, glancing at the faces around her, who were devoid of any emotion. Tiffany raised her face, her eyes boring right into Seohyun's. Sunny raised her eyebrows at Taeyeon, who shook her head hesitantly. Sunny nodded in response, directing Seohyun towards the open window, where the sunlight was shining brightly. She pushed the sleeve of her school blazer up the her elbow, revealing a long gash starting from the wrist and ending in the crook of her elbow. Seohyun gasped, surprised, as she reached out tentatively to touch the healed wound.

"Well, this isn't the work of Hyun-ah herself, but we do know that her dad is the boss of a rather large underground gang," as Sunny nodded towards Tiffany, who raised a hand to acknowledge that she got the information. "She told one of the gang members to do this to me. I guess I was lucky that there was a police raid that day, I managed to escape unscathed, except for this scar." She yanked her sleeve down, her eyes blazed with fury and determination. Her gaze then softened as she turned towards Seohyun. "I don't want this to happen to you."

Taeyeon nervously cleared her throat, and attracted everyone's attention. Jesscia raised an eyebrow at Taeyeon, who then, once again, shook her head. Jessica sighed, standing up and walking over to Seohyun. "Well, to cut it short, we are going to protect you from Hyun-ah, to prevent you from becoming the next victim. It sucks, and I hate to wield my power this way, but I will call on my members and defend you if I need to." Jesscia stated simply. "The thing is, you have to let us protect you. Friends?" Jessica then asked as she stuck her hand out, cocking her head to the side as she waited silently. Seohyun looked around the room, at all the faces around her, all eager to help out and share this burden with her. Her gaze finally settled down on Jessica, who was still waiting patiently, as she stuck out her hand further. Seohyun raised her hand tentatively and grasped it, sealing their friendship. Sooyoung cheered and everyone broke out into smiles.

"It's amazing how a few strangers are willing to risk everything they have just for me" Seohyun thought, touched.

"Yoona…." Seohyun mumbled, capturing the attention and the sharp ears of Tiffany. She looked at Taeyeon, who nodded to give her the go-ahead. "Since you are in our 'gang' now," Tiffany joked, "you should know that Hyun-ah left Yoona such a scar that she still has that painful torture etched in her head. We cannot tell you yet without Yoona's permission, although she raised the idea of you entering our gang. We all heard it from Yoona herself, and we believe you will be the same in the future." Tiffany said cautiously, assessing Seohyun's reaction. Seohyun widened her eyes, hurt piercing through her, as she felt a sudden surge of anger within her, directed at the person who caused so much hurt and pain to her friend who she had just barely met a few days ago.

"Now, she's at her appointment with her doctor. After this, I guess we will probably be going out to celebrate?" Sooyoung exclaimed. Seohyun hurriedly shook her head, gesturing wildly to her watch. It was already half an hour past the time they were let off, and her mother would be here in an hour. "My mum…." She mumbled to herself, and Tiffany looked up, sensing something wrong with the tone of her voice. She lifted herself off the chair gently, bending her body down in order to look at Seohyun, who had taken to looking at the floor. She knew that look once. Her mother was, as well, strict on her and had forbidden to let her leave the house. Until she knew what was happening and in store waiting for me if I hadn't had these friends. Tiffany thought to herself, partially amused at the recollection. She nodded simply, as she turned her gaze to Jessica, who had immediately inferred and caught on.

"Alright, at least that cuts down our scope a little. Remember, Seohyun, whatever happens at home, don't go out at night without us. We are sorry for dragging you in with us, and you are following this route, you have to know that there are potential enemies everywhere. It's no longer safe to be naïve and innocent, trusting anyone at all. In fact, you should be a little doubtful of me. Just remember, don't go anywhere without us." Jessica warned, staring straight into Seohyun's eyes to get her point through. Seohyun nodded cautiously, thoroughly confused. She waved goodbye to her new friends, before grabbing her bag and dashing to the carpark, while Sunny and Tiffany chased after her to make sure that she would be fine all the way to her mother's vehicle.

Jessica raised her phone to her ears, and listened to her person who was at the other end all throughout this whole meeting.

"Did you hear that first sentence of mine? Not bad, she's finally worth you coming out to protect her. Like finally you are doing this for someone." Jessica rolled her eyes.

"Hey Jessica, job nicely done." He stated simply, blatantly ignoring the previous sentence and changing the subject quickly, earning a smirk from Jessica.

"Yah, don't you know you are dealing with the pro?" Taeyeon shouted across, mimicking Jessica's smirk, earning a playful shove.

"Of course I do. Sorry unni." He said in a mocking tone, while the others listening in on the conversation laughed out loud.

"But seriously, nice one. At least we now have her permission to protect her. And yeah, I'm starting her training tomorrow. But I wouldn't be doing it explicitly. Don't pretend to know me." He mocked once again, and the others could practically see the one-sided smirk through the phone.

"Do your best, and till then, see ya and don't get the person I'm supposed to protect in trouble. Remember. Till the next time." Kyuhyun hanged up the phone, and Jessica slid the phone shut smoothly, ending their conversation. She glanced over at the 2 other members, sharing their secret smile. I guess, it's just starting to finally get interesting, my childhood friend.
