I got this from emocezi .  It was amusing, so I thought I'd do mine.  I typed in You know you're from  ______ on google and it took me to a site that gave me this:

You Know You're From Oklahoma When...

  • You say ya'll ... many times a day.
  • Bedlam is a BIG deal.
  • You can tell when it's tornado weather.
  • When you drive through a neighborhood anyone out walking ( Read more... )

all the nouns, things, funny, oklahoma, people, places

They are towns here and they don't sound like they are spelled, at least to non-Okies.

Oh, I did, but I was at my mom's when I read it. You and my husband have a lot in common. He loves that movie. I"m not sure if it's because he has rock star dreams of his own or because he enjoys the story. Or perhaps it's all the babes...

I actually listen to more alternative/punk and classic rock and am terrible about names. (I can tell you the lead singer's names from Zep, REM or the Dead Kennedy's, but only because I really like them as artists.)

Thanks for the comment on my post. I'm glad you understood most, even if you aren't an Okie.

Some (actually many) can be applied to Missouri.

True story: There's a small town in Missouri named Versailles. Once when I was heading to Jefferson City (the capitol) I had to stop in yet another small town to double check my directions because you changed highways near Versailles to get to Jeff City.

I asked the gas station attendant how close to Versailles I was, but I pronounced like the French "Ver-Sigh."

"Huh?" he asked.

"Ver-sigh" I repeated.

"Don't know where that is." he said.

I pointed to the town on the map.

"Oh! You mean Ver-sales!"

I've been to both Versailles and Versales. And I've been to Miamuh (the way we pronounce it) but never Miami.

I loved the convo I was part of. Some dude from Prairie du Chien (prairie do sheen) was complaining about the way they say the French words. This other dude said that we usually preserve the Spanish pronunciation here, to which I pointed out, "Yeah, that why we pronounce Amarillo like it rhymes with pillow, and we also say the Rio Grand RIVER."

I did not make a friend that day.

BTW, for those who don't know, it's Gotebo: GO-te-boe. Chickasha: CHIC-ka-shay, Eufaula: YOU-falluh, and Okemah: O-KEE-muh. All supposedly Native American words and all not pronounced like you would think.
