rdm-ation or on tumblr This fic, conceived of back during 2.22, is now officially pretty much a little farewell ode to a specific version of Will Schuester: someone who is deeply flawed and selfish in the way he goes about it, but does put his kids first.
This is the moment Will knows he's not staying in New York.
"He put [his dreams] in a drawer. And sometimes, late at night, we take them out and admire them. But it gets harder and harder to close the drawer... He does. And that is why he is brave."
-Mrs. Darling, Peter Pan
“You’ve inspired us in so many ways, so… this is just another,” Rachel says, and Will knows he’s not staying in New York.
In New Directions’ first year, Will had sometimes gone to the bookstore to choose the stories he would tell his daughter. Once, Quinn was there too. “No fairy tales,” she said, and when he asked why not, “Happily ever after is a pretty big disappointment to set someone up for, don’t you think?”
This is the trade: He will tell them that they can make it, and some of them will, but only if all of them trust that it’s the truth. He can’t stay, because if he failed they would see - and then why should they believe him?
Why should they believe him? is too easy a question to ask, even without New York.
Will would have told his daughter fairy tales. They’re all he knows.
