Toronto Steampunk Society outing

May 17, 2009 18:58

Today I went to a TSS gathering. I'd intended to wear my new tweed corset (*mutter mutter, throws something across room*) but suffice it to say that I screwed up on sewing the left half and it just wasn't ready to wear. So instead I wore my dusky-purple skirt with the 16' hem (and yes, with the massive petticoat underneath), and my green brocade ( Read more... )

Ooooh I really like the pics. What is steampunk! And the goggles. So mysterious. I must learn more!

Steampunk is an alternate view of history - the way I think of it is, "Imagine what would have happened if the Industrial Revolution had occurred during the era of steam power (Victorian/Edwardian era)?" So it's like bringing the Victorian into the modern era. :)

Goggles tend to be a major part of many people's steampunk costumes because so many of us choose to play characters that are in the vein of mad scientists, or captains/crew of steamships (by which I mean, steam-powered airships - usually referred to as "dirigibles"), etc. Cogs and other industrial parts also tend to be iconic for steampunk (hence why there's a cog in my journal's header).

My goggles were hand-made (by me) from a pair of old leather boots - photo tutorial is here. My character, Augusta, is a steamship pilot who is growing discontented with her current place in life. Her outfit (with the breeches and gun) in the linked pics is my standard Augusta outfit; that's the sort of thing she'd wear when working on the ship, because she's practical and it's absurd to ( ... )

There were a ridiculous amount of awesome hats. <3

Thanks! I really can't speak highly enough of that corset - Dianna's website is Starkers and she does amazing work. Mine is a classic Victorian; I'd would love to get one of her Batty or Gabrielle corsets as well once I have a lot of disposable income again. :)

Thanks! :) Other than the satchel (which was sewn from scratch), there wasn't that much sewing involved - basically adding a waistband to the tulle petticoat, adding a waistband to the overskirt, and adding the brocade ruffle edge to the hem. (Which was such a hassle - I hate pinning to begin with, and evenly pinning ruffles to a 16' hem was a new level of hellishness.)

Gorgeous pics! My friend Matt was there - did you meet him? Judging by the pics he was wearing goggles and the jacket with the three buckles across the front.

I'm abysmal with names, but I did meet everyone there for sure, and I do remember him. :) We didn't have a chance to chat or anything though, I was mostly chatting with Cliff/Elf (in the red jacket and pith helmet), Jody (in the tan military uniform with white pants), Amanda (with me in the last picture), and canuckdesz (chick in black jacket and red shirt, but not the pirate).
