Thoroughly Modern Millie: Thoroughly Great Fun

Jul 29, 2013 13:10

Friday C-- and I went to see Stage 1 Theatre's production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. C-- has a connection to the group, but I'd never heard of them before this. After our last show viewing together, I went in with very low expectations. The run-down school theatre in Newark where they perform didn't raise them any. And maybe it was that ( Read more... )

I am hoping to get to see Les Mis in late Sept/early Oct. but comparing their performance dates with Ruddigore, I'm not entirely sure it's possible, unless I make a crazy long day of Saturday 28 Sept and go to see Les Mis' opening night the day of our big orchestra rehearsal.

On the other hand, because I'm in Les Mis, we have an extra ticket for Ruddigore, if you wanted to see me sing chorus (and a bunch of other fine performers along with me telling a story, blah blah blah) on the 6th October Sunday matinee, you could go with Chris and Teo. Either that, or I make Chris sell all y'all at his work a bunch of tickets and you go as a group. :-)

I like the point about community theater being limited in resources so therefore about tradeoffs and attitude.

I mean, so many things are about resource management. But sometimes people get caught up in the financial trade offs. They forget that volunteer labor is also a finite resource, as is performer energy. Do you want your performers bleeding off all their energy dealing with the insecurities and frustrations of, say, a chaotic rehearsal schedule, or do you want them spending all their attention on, oh, I don't know, learning their music or their choreography, secure that they aren't going to have to rearrange their lives for yet another rehearsal changed out from under them?

I finally got around to logging on to LJ so I could read your reviews of 9 to 5 & Millie! I definitely agree with all your comments. For me, I couldn't really notice the mic problems in 9 to 5 because I was so disconcerted by the fact that the brass were not on the same beat as the drums (which was explained to us by my friend who was in the production, but still ( ... )

What are your dates? If you don't have a Thursday perf, maybe you can make the 10th? I'm hoping to see your opening show, but as I may have mentioned elsewhere, we move in to the theatre the day after you open. (Too bad you don't open on a Friday.) Hm... though I could be really insane if you have a 4 Oct Friday night show and go on the "dark" night. The website for your show is less than helpful about specific dates.
