Part 1, Chapter 6

The next few months were among the most confusing and conflicted of Ennis’ life.

He knew what would have happened if David hadn’t turned away when he had, recognized the gathering storm in him and the point when lightning was going to strike, no two ways about it. They’d have been on the ground together next to that stream, doing another kind of ( Read more... )

the fear and loneliness is palpable. it is the very essence of grief. the loss of a spouse or lover is unlike any other. its difficult to not feel like you are betraying the one which has gone..however you must put them to rest somehow if you are going to keep moving in your own life..the imagery of the shirts is making the whole story connect to the way ennis lives his life.

Some of Ennis' speculation about the life he and Jack could have had is an indication that he's becoming more accepting of his own sexuality; i.e., he's thinking of being in a long-term married life with another man in positive terms. That's part of the meaning of Jack's remark about "changing horses". But it is also an element of mourning for anyone, especially a spouse: those little everyday things can really get to you and and suddenly become so significant. After all, that's how long-term partners do build that life together; one pitted cherry at a time, so to speak.

So this is the end of Part 1 - you are going to continue onto Part 2 aren't you? *hoping* I'll be interested to see what the delineation between Parts 1 & 2 is. It's tempting to assume Part 2 sees a more together Ennis but on the other hand, I can't forget it's Ennis & I doubt he'd be able to completely transform. Or maybe it's cos Jack will no longer appear to him...I guess I should just patiently wait & see ( ... )

Wow. The last two chapters were just amazing. I am so glad to see that you've updated this.

I find Ennis's dreams/fantasies amazing, and how they are weaving their way into his everyday life.

Even more so, I am curious to see what happens with David -- I am sure it will be a source of conflict and worry for Ennis.

I am really loving this, and looking forward to more.
