Part 1, Chapter 6

The next few months were among the most confusing and conflicted of Ennis’ life.

He knew what would have happened if David hadn’t turned away when he had, recognized the gathering storm in him and the point when lightning was going to strike, no two ways about it. They’d have been on the ground together next to that stream, doing another kind of ( Read more... )

So this is the end of Part 1 - you are going to continue onto Part 2 aren't you? *hoping* I'll be interested to see what the delineation between Parts 1 & 2 is. It's tempting to assume Part 2 sees a more together Ennis but on the other hand, I can't forget it's Ennis & I doubt he'd be able to completely transform. Or maybe it's cos Jack will no longer appear to him...I guess I should just patiently wait & see!

I liked Jack's wording "changin' horses", the most sympathetic way to suggest Ennis might be moving on or getting interested in someone else. These everyday fantasies that Ennis becomes so involved in are indeed very compelling. I was again wondering if he was going out of his mind, in the sense that the hurt was so strong his mind was forcing him to think of something happy. Yet at the same time of course, emphasising the fact him & Jack never got to experience that "mundane holiness". Those passages came across as very real and I almost felt like it was a parallel universe & maybe something extremely weird was going on, especially with Jack "crossing over". But it is more like Jack is needing to help Ennis out, as whatever place Jack is in, it is difficult for him to see him being so miserable.

Despite the misery there were a couple of humourous bits: the velcro made me smile, as did in Ch 5, Ennis's view of David's sweatshirt suddenly becoming "improbably sensual" ! That point was very well handled in your handling, even though it was a split second it was clear exactly what transpired.

OK, I've rambled for ages. I shall now try to conjure up some patience to sustain me until your next posting!
