Pigford v. Glickman: 86,000 claims from 39,697 total farmers?

This means that the U.S. may be recompensing at least 86,000 African-American farmers for past racial discrimination. But how could that possibly be true if there are only 39,697 African-American farmers in existence nationwide? And if only some subset of them ever applied for loans in ( Read more... )

Perhaps some of the claims were in error in some way, and had to be re-submitted.
Perhaps there were multiple instances that qualified for restitution per farmer, each requiring a claim.
Perhaps this is total claims over the life of the program, and there are *currently* only 39k farmers.

I'm thinking that in addition to black farmers being discriminated against, it probably included other races as well. Also, I thought that many had lost their farms over this discrimination and filed claims as well. They weren't calling themselves farmers at the time that census was taken.

At that site that was posted it said that a large percentage didn't make the deadline for a variety of reasons. Obama and Chuck Grassley both, as senators, had the case reopened. A judge held the federal government responsible for the decline of black farmers. It does explain the disparity.

Yep, happened with the Exxon Valdez, many of the fisherman in the original lawsuits eventually lost their businesses due to Exxon's appealing the damages. Even a few of the original waterman had died in the intervening 12 years.

If you look at the second edit you'll see that there were a lot less farmers at the time of the loans being considered.

Hey Uncle Sam! Microsoft Excel has this thing called Conditional Formatting. You can highlight a cell Red if it's greater than some other number. Look into it.

I'm shocked there are so few black farmers. That means only about 4% of farms are run by black people. It should be closer to 8-12%.

What is keeping black folks out of this industry?
