Words like bullets

A lot of ink has been spilled over the Israeli-Turkish scandal in the wake of the Israeli raid on the flotilla. One thing keeps getting repeated: "Nothing will be the same any more". That was repeated by the Turkish PM Erdogan himself, as well. I think his words summarise the situation in the Middle East very properly. And things are of course much ( Read more... )

Turkey is happy to have Israel and its neighbors at each other's throats so they don't get together and challenge Turkey in the region. Europe is glad to see it for similar reasons.

I don't think that's true. Regional stability spills over. It hurts regional economies. Its much better for your country if your neighbor is stable and prosperous and you can trade with them and not worry about them exporting violence to you than if your neighbors are always blowing each other up. Turkey knows it would be better for the region if people were at peace and prosperous.

Israel should finish it's security wall and then welcome the new Palestinian state and it's awesome leaders into the world community.

It will be fun watching Hamas spend so much time fixing potholes and trying to herd the various "refugee" populations that it can't focus on killing Jews.

I don't think Israel will ever accept a Palestinian state.

If there will be a real question about palestinian state it will be solved by Jordan absorbing it. Because unlike Gaza which can live off it's amazing waterfront real estate, West Bank has nothing to offer.

"Jordan absorbing it" is an ironic thought, considering that TransJordan was created to BE that Palestinian state.

Don't you think that would cause even more problems?

Then again... USS Liberty. I suppose if you can get away with that you can get away with anything.

A blockade that is a breach of the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention and the 1977 amendment on the basis of the suffering it is causing harm to civilians and is collective punishment?

A blockade which the United Nations in Gaza, John Ging, has publicly called on the international community to defy?

That's a blockade that's worthy of breaching.

In my impression Erdogan doesnt want to either depart from the EU orbit nor to be the flag-bearer of the Middle East Muslim countries. He'd rather prefer to be the balance maker and an arbiter, ie the factor no-one could ever bypass any more, which is to say he wants a more active, bigger role for Turkey, but not as part of any "bloc" on either side of the Bosphorus. He wants a dual status for Turkey. A unique position of its own. And that makes sense for his country, of course.

The means he chooses to employ in order to achieves this, are another story.
