If the Russians do what I expect they might well do, march in their armies and do so in a sense not just of defeating Daesh but consolidating a new basis of Russian power in the region and empire-building, then the question is if the United States decides this time to back Russia or Daesh. I mean that's not unprecedented for America to back Islamists when they do their usual tricks against Russian boys, as opposed to American boys.

Well, Russia would be stupid not to pay attention to the fact that most major terrorist networks around the world are now practically working in the same direction. Boko Haram in Africa has already pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, and it's not like a number of Caucasus militants haven't been fighting for and on behalf of the Islamic State for a very long time now. It was only a matter of time before the IS itself turned their attention to regions that are in Russia's direct zone of interest.
