Yet another wall

Welcome to my mid-20th century world, you fellow chauvinistic xenophobians (sic?!) peace-loving tolerant folks who want nothing but love and harmony throughout the Universe! Let's begin today's rant with a picture. Yep, this is a wall. OK, let's say it's a fence. But we call it a wall. Anyway. Could you try to guess where it's located? Palestine? ( Read more... )

Right now I'm ashamed to be part of this nation.

That is all of us, from time to time, in the "developed" world: only partially assuaged during the few occasions when we get things right.

It is a good thing the Turks built that nice barricade to keep out the barbarian hordes of dirty hippies streaming in to protest the renovation of urban parks. Oops! My bad.

BTW, it is funny that I am too young to remember the construction of the Berlin Wall and I now work with people who are too young to remember its destruction.

And the parallels don't stop there. At least nominally, the Berlin Wall...

Unlike the walls you're complaining about, the Berlin Wall was to keep people in, not out, like the Great Wall of China.

Who built the wall?
What was it for?

It was built by the Soviets to keep East Germans from escaping into West Germany.

Four astoundingly ignorant replies. Awesome day.

I already told you what the wall was for. To keep East Germans OUT of West Berlin, and ultimately IN East Germany, yes. So things are not as simple as you're trying to present them.

I'm beginning to sense a few hundred brain cells dying the more this conversation proceeds.

I suggest you have some geography for dinner. It's delicious.

It shouldn't be a gargantuan task to house and feed 6,000 people or even 60,000 for that matter, with a little planning and goodwill. The problem is that by putting them in 'refugee camps' and isolating them, they become useless or even worse.

At least you guys provide actual hostels for the refugees. As opposed to tents in the desert. Keep up the good work, I say! And may those, how was it, powdered poodles in Europe, reveal themselves for who they really are. It's now time to show one's worth. A society is measured by the way it treats the weakest.
