It wasn't New York that took out insulting ads in other states.

And yeah, those are all "typical" New Yorkers. Lots of different colors, languages, and foods there. I can see why some Texans would find that scary.

nahhh, we keep our ads that insult other states in the state, as all states should.

i mean, you ever see the Manhattan Mini Storage ads? they pander to NYC based audience, HARD. examples:

'sure, cause you'll fit right in in CT'
'why leave a city that has 6 major sports teams, and the mets?'
a week-ish before gay marriage passed here they had:
dont like gay marriage? dont get gay married.

Yes, a promotional ad within a state is a far cry from taking out ads in other states that insult those other states.

And if business is so great in Texas, why do they feel compelled to take out these ads?

This reminds me of a cab ride I took in 1978 with some punk-scene Brits who were arguing with me about music in the UK vs. the US. At one point, completely frustrated, I said "What about The Ramones?" As if on cue, they looked at each other for a moment and then replied "The Ramones? 'Oos she??"

Well, punk kids could be a bit homophobic at times.

Personally I'd have gone with the MC5, the New York Dolls, and perhaps Iggy and the Stooges on that discussion.

And I'll grant you, NY is certainly the only other contender for greatest, most diverse city in the world. (Which ain't the same thing as largest or most populous, as we both agree.)

I'm not sure, but I don't think that what the map means, it's a very cool linguistic survey, and shows respondents answers to questions, such as "When you hear the words 'the city', what do you think that means?" The answer given ("New York City") is given in red. If it were a map of former NYCers, Atlanta wouldn't be so blue.

I'm still curious to see how many people said "L.A."
