Okay, comrades, let's punish Elton John too, why don't you?

We've had quite a debate around here the other day about the frightening prospect of people marrying donkeys, dogs laying with cats, and all that apocalyptic stuff that obviously scares the shit out of some people. Well, some in the audience might've felt shocked and appalled by some of the responses, and they may have found themselves scratching ( Read more... )

Ah, so Putin is leaning upon the fact that the majority of his people are homophobes, and enforcing their agenda on all the rest. Who does that remind me of? Oh yes, Erdogan who's also citing public support for his government as an excuse for his actions against the Taksim Sq protesters. How utterly democratic indeed.

Nothing to do with Putin. It's called democracy, dude.
Over 75% of population strongly suppport it, 90% - 'just support'.

And the minority? What should they do? Shut up or die? That's not democracy, it's called the dictatorship of the majority.

Here's a decent manly and very Russian-like ouftit that Sir Elton John should probably borrow from the honourable Msr Depardieu.

According to data from the Moscow institute "Levada", in April nearly half (47%) of the Russians believed that curbing the rights of homosexuals would be the right thing to do.

I'm surprised by how low that number is actually. Didn't that anti-gay propaganda bill pass by like 400-0 votes. While I realize representation means some different things in Russia, seriously, not a single vote against?

Also, the link about that bill is subscribers only.

The fact that half the people do not support that view doesn't necessarily result in just half of the members of parliament supporting it. ;)

Well, of course. But I would suspect at least a few members of parliament voting against it!

Authoritarianism and homophobia go hand in hand, since all authoritarian structures fundamentally rely upon arbitrary structures of power, and there is no more an arbitrary structure of power than patriarchy.

The fastest way to assert power is to control what people do in the bedroom, after all

When people act this way towards people of different sexual orientations they usually think they're doing their religion a favor, in this case the Russian Orthodox seem to be involved according to the OP.
