So....

I found out today that the trailer for Watchmen used the Smashing Pumpkin's track The beginning is the end is the beginning.

I am insanely fucking happy about this. This track was the B side to The End is the beginning is the end, a track that was, unfortunately, used as the theme on that utter abortion of a Batman movie Batman & batnipples Robin ( Read more... )

You didn't like V for Vendetta? I know it was a gross simplification of the story...but I thought it kept with the spirit very well.

I thoroughly enjoyed V in both forms. Watchmen was great in print...I was left feeling rather let down by the movie form, though. (Though they NAILED rorschach imo, which really was the most important thing to me :)

Rorsarch and Manhattan were nailed fucking beautifully. And, suprisingly, Nite owl II. Apparently the guy playing him is actually quite a pretty boy and had to whack on something like 25 pounds for the 80's scenes.

What was missing from the movie was due to no fault of the script or acting..just the medium (They simply couldn't fit all that backstory into a movie format.) And the modification they made to the climax (the method of delivery) actually does suit better than that of the original print. Snyder did a fucking stellar job.

V...V was just gutted. Gnh. It was like going from the book Starship Troopers to the movie - the entire message and theme was corrupted and twisted. And From Hell turned into something that at times is hilariously farcical.

I dunno, I think V was a highly enjoyable movie. And living stateside, it had a not so subtle message to deliver at a time when a lot of us needed hope :)

yeah Starship Troopers the book was all about political theory revolving around military duty, and the motivations for going to war. Starship Troopers the movie was about Starcraft fanservice and redheads with nice tits.

Not that I object to either of those. BUT WHERE WAS THE POWERED BATTLE ARMOR DAMMIT?!?

I think the crowning example of how badly they didn't do the research was the knife scene.

"Why are we learning how to train with knives when we have nukes?"

The book: "Would you use an axe to spank a baby?" The military is about the application of controlled force, not blind execution.

The film: *throws knife through hand* "Try pressing a button now" *hyuk hyuk hyuk*

Nick Mollo totally redeemed V For Vendetta. He re-aligned the story to be very true to the graphic novel, and restored the political landscape from conservative fascism to national socialism. You should give it a watch:

Oooh I should go there more often. There's an epic recut of Terminator III that makes it fucking brilliant.

Out of curiosity, which cut of T3? I have seen all three, and while I still think ADM is hands-down the best fan editor, my choice would have to be between "T-Hope Edition" and "The Coming Storm".

HOWEVER, if, like me, you've replaced your Terminator and T2 copies for ADM's Extended Edition, then his Alternate Cut fits like a glove.

I'm hoping he'll do one for Salvation, but until he does, Scaperat's version works for me.

I think it was coming storm - unfortunately I don't have it any more. But I do recall in his breakdown saying "Cut out all that thrashing and squealing" (on the magnet scene)

The part of the trailer that goes "In your darkest hour" as the flag is draped over the coffin always got me. Fantastic song, perfect for the trailer.

And the film was damned good - apart from two bits. One was the change of Rorschach's method of justice (I felt that he was too involved, rather than being "he lives or he doesn't" and letting the murderer attempt to get out of it). The other was prefaced by Leonard Cohen.

I dunno, the...viscerality of the clever works. Especially when combined with the infamous "Men get arrested. Dogs get put down." line. And TBH the whole "handcuff and flambe" is getting rather cliched :P (It was probably shifted due to this and similarity to Saw and shit)

They actually made Rorschach even more psychotic - without losing that pathos of his ending - which is rather impressive.

And come on, that Laurie/Dan sex scene was well done. Pity they used fucking Cohen's version though.

I suppose, but it seemed a little... basic. I don't know, I still would have preferred the original, but I'm right with you on the ending.

And yes - why Cohen? The major issue was that having that version in particular lead to some nervous giggles in the cinema, then as the scene went on and on... and on... with the music playing, toes started to curl. The scene itself wasn't so bad (if a little in-your-face) but I struggled with having that play over it.

Cohen's version has been surpassed by many, many covers. Mind you, there's actually a great mvid out there that lays Smashing Pumpkin's Tonight, Tonight over the top, which is fucking brilliant. (got a copy if you want). Takes on whole new dimensions when you know the GN and Dan's issues with impotency.

And yes, sex is in your face. Oh noes. Men sticking their penises in women! What is the world coming to! I actually thought that was very well acted and believable, and TBH kinda hot :D
