Please Clarify Your Conditionals

I was chatting with my girlfriend at work. She was getting frustrated with my responses and I wasn't sure why. There were two reasons for this miscommunication. One, what she meant was not what she was typing out over chat. Two, I work as a computer programmer and while at work, my brain works very differently
