So today I finished reading Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers on the bus (why they didn't call it Harry Potter et la Pierre philosophale is beyond me, but not related to this post). After I put the book back in my back the guy next to me says "Excuse me, but were you just reading Harry Potter in French

It's bad enough they renamed it "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" for the American printing, but "Harry Potter at the Sorcerer's School"? (if I'm reading that correctly)

What do they call the stone itself in the French version? The Philosopher's Stone or the Sorcerer's Stone?

My "We are not Amused" icon wasn't referring to your post (which was amusing), but rather to the renaming of the book.

Yup. that, or "Harry Potter at the Wizard's School". And the stone was called "la Pierre philosophale", aka, the Philosopher's stone. It was interesting to see how close the translations were, but a lot of the names changed, and seeing "Snape" become "Rogue" and "Fang" become "Crockdur" required a bit of a mind-twist. I liked Neville's new last name though: Londubat. hee!
