That was the first time ever in my life (it has become more common since then) that I didn't mind the books didn't end with them happily-ever-after. It was my first foray into bittersweet romance and while I still prefer shmoopy forever love I now am more forgiving of those bittersweet endings.
As a PS I love Snape too, and often confuse fiction with the books because I didn't even get all that into the books. I draw the line at Harry/Snape though, not because of the age difference or the slash, but because (dammit) Snape/Hermione. (There is one fic for them that is literally so good it ruined all the others for me, in a good way.)
I don't usually do OT3s but I can see the Jack/Norrington/Will thing, to a point. And I still love Eve to death, but with her not in the picture can totally see Sylar/Mohinder.
