Having been in a seriously (seriously) wanktastic fandom before 5-0 I have to say that fandom is not going to be a happy place for everybody. It just won't. There are cycles of cranky that wax and wane. That said, you gotta do what you must to take care of you. weed out the haters and focus on steve's face!

I'm part of those not that enthusiastic about the show anymore, and it's mostly because I got into a new one. But yeah, I'm all for everybody having a good time, so I'm not compelled to rant about how the show doesn't appeal to me like it used to. Anyway, I haven't much more to add except that you could use lists on twitter... It would allow you to put all the positive people in one place, and you could only read that feed during and right after the episode, and go to back to your normal one once it quieted down. It's been pretty useful to me, because I'm terrible at unfollowing, and twitter is sometimes too much information, so I use lists so i can focus on one "topic" at a time

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the definition of fandom = liking something, so I'm totally with you in not getting the complaining business. In other news, I read something (which could be totally bogus, naturally) that said complaining actually makes the person listening to it 'dumber.' The low-level stress of listening to negativity on a constant basis causes brain cells in a certain area to become less effective - or something like that. Whether that's factual or no, I think the stressful part is pretty clear. Being around people who find no joy in life and have to tear everything down, judge everything, wears on you. It's not good for anybody.

But apparently complaining is also an ice-breaker. It's a goofy way of finding other people who believe the same things you do. There must be a better way!

And the whole idea of hating a relationship or a person who is fictional with that much vigor says to me there's a bigger problem out there. So much judgement. People are people. And everybody is allowed to like things or ( ... )

I'm using twitter mostly to follow celebrities and there are several fandom friends there, though they don't tend to live-tweet much. over exposure to every little reaction, especially if you don't agree, can indeed become a squee killer. there sooooo little few reactions posts on my flist these days, for all the shows, that I am not overexposed myself. In fact I might miss it a bit, and miss sharing mines. I'll probably start again with the new season of Teen Wolf just because it's my new squeeze and there is an excitement there that I lost for other shows (that I still watch and enjoy, just don't fangirl about anymore ( ... )

This sounds like the Kirk/Spock fandom, where a few years ago after STXI came out, a bunch of K/S slashers tried to start a petition demanding Kirk and Spock romance be included in the next film, for gay rights etc!! The gay rights part was particularly crass, seeing as we know that the real motivation is straight girl fanservice as straight fans play a big part in most slash fandoms, so dressing up their self-serving demands as part of some sort of equal rights noble fight, it didn't seem to occur to any of them that it was an asshole move. Especially when they asked for their particular OTP and not, say, just have gay characters with romantic on-screen time or something like that, no it HAD to be Kirk and Spock or forget it ( ... )
