SOPA: The Internetz Fight Back

Jan 05, 2012 11:25

People are linking this article all over facebook.

Personally, I think a preemptive strike is a GREAT idea, but I am a bit surprised that a money-hungry juggernaut like paypal is willing to throw in on the action. Not shocked that Etsy is in on it though, since I know from experience that they have already been getting a lot of their fan-run stores ( Read more... )

I have mixed feelings about this. Yes, a day-long black-out is an effective way to get a point across, and hopefully it will inconvenience the lawmakers and PTB as much as it inconveniences us (whether directly or by the massive amounts of letters they receive ( ... )

I think that is kind of the point - sites like etsy and google are going to be opened up to fire by this law, and the people fighting to pass it don't seem to realize the full ramifications of the underwriting. A full-stop shut down will show everyone exactly how far-reaching the consequences of passing such a law could be. Commerce WOULD be affected in the long run, so why not demonstrate that now? It's so much bigger than just commerce, though - think of how many apps run off of google! O.O ( ... )

Don't get me wrong, I support the black-out. Though I question the timing. Will a day before the vote really give people enough time to make a noticeable fuss? Perhaps losing FB and Twitter for a while will show the politico how inconvenienced they will be ( ... )

Yeah, it's a tough call. I'd prefer they do it sooner.

On a separate topic, how does your Etsy store do for you? I'd like to talk to someone who actually has a shop, if we could. We can take the conversation to e-mail, if you like, and if you have the time.

I don't stock it nearly the way I should, although I am hoping that will change soon, but overall, etsy is great as far as fees, etc. Actually I just had a teacher of mine that owns her own studio switch to etsy after running her own website for years. There is no overhead with etsy - you pay .20 to list an item and they take I think like 1 percent or something - WAY cheaper than ebay. And it's not an auction so each item listed stays posted for I think 6 months before it expires. It's worth checking out.

I like it when people think of big smart ways to say no to things instead of sitting around in parks smelling bad and acting like they have plans. *nodnod*

It is extremely annoying that the majority of lawmakers who want this bill are people who didn't grow up with the internet, so all they see is streaming pirated content. There are very few politicians my age who have watched the way the internet evolved and were part of that. I mean, seriously, who of my age group *didn't* download music as soon as they were able to?

I guess it was better trading mixtapes on bulletin boards.

I would support going dark for a day, just to make a point. I might even get some reading done. ;)

That is an extremely good point. I'd add to that that the entire baby boomer generation is much the same, and they make up what, 2/3 of the voting population?
