SOPA: The Internetz Fight Back

People are linking this article all over facebook.

Personally, I think a preemptive strike is a GREAT idea, but I am a bit surprised that a money-hungry juggernaut like paypal is willing to throw in on the action. Not shocked that Etsy is in on it though, since I know from experience that they have already been getting a lot of their fan-run stores ( Read more... )

Don't get me wrong, I support the black-out. Though I question the timing. Will a day before the vote really give people enough time to make a noticeable fuss? Perhaps losing FB and Twitter for a while will show the politico how inconvenienced they will be?

(Oh. I'll have to warn my mom, though. They've been having computer probs, and so got a shiny new one. If she can't access FB, she'll freak. Oh, my mom-in-law, too. Probably won't freak, but she'll call Geo asking what's wrong.)

At any rate, SOPA seems to be a reaction of panic. Panic rarely leads to sound decision-making. It also smells like a corporate lobby. Don't get me started.

There are already measures in place wherein rights holders can take action in court . . . or not, should they choose not to (like pretty much every right holder who takes advantage of and encourages fan activity and only pursue those whom they think are actually infringing on rights).

If foreign piracy sites are the issues, that's what they should be targeting. Like, say, reduce business with countries that harbor these sites. Instead, we're opening our own citizenry up to prosecution while the pirates find alternative outlets.

Blech.

It's all very sad face-making. :-(

On a separate topic, how does your Etsy store do for you? I'd like to talk to someone who actually has a shop, if we could. We can take the conversation to e-mail, if you like, and if you have the time.

Yeah, it's a tough call. I'd prefer they do it sooner.

I don't stock it nearly the way I should, although I am hoping that will change soon, but overall, etsy is great as far as fees, etc. Actually I just had a teacher of mine that owns her own studio switch to etsy after running her own website for years. There is no overhead with etsy - you pay .20 to list an item and they take I think like 1 percent or something - WAY cheaper than ebay. And it's not an auction so each item listed stays posted for I think 6 months before it expires. It's worth checking out.
