Chapter 2

It’s starting to get dark outside and Yunho is at his wits’ end: he grips the steering wheel and tries to gently wiggle his right leg, which is still caught under the massive weight of the white yeti lazily sprawled over both his and Jaejoong’s laps. His thigh has died a long time ago and now his toes are starting to go numb too, which is a problem considering that he’s driving and his right foot is supposed to be operating both the brake and the gas pedal.

But that’s not why Yunho is at his wits’ end though: more like he really doesn’t know what to do with the odd man that shows no sign of wanting to get off. Jaejoong never revealed his destination so Yunho cannot really randomly kick him out either; what if they are still travelling to the same direction? Now that would be real awkward. But what would be even more awkward, is if Jaejoong continues to ignore the fact that hitchhikers are supposed to travel with one car only for a while and then get off at some crossroads with a “our short story together ends here” kind of emotional goodbye.

Quite frankly, Yunho wants to pull over already. He’s been driving nonstop since he left Seoul, and even if it isn’t that long ago, he’s still tired. After all, he had had to wake up really early for the stupid exam he wishes he will never have to retake again. Two times is totally enough. It’s not his fault that every time he takes the course something just has to go wrong, right? He didn’t kill any of those relatives, or make any of those girlfriends cheat on his friends, or make any of his friends cheat on their girlfriends, or arrange the firing of any of the said lazy-ass, incompetent friends. Neither is it his fault that all his friends seem to regard him as the best listener they have in their life and require endless comfort from him.

Yunho doesn’t even realise he’s spacing out again until an already scarily familiar pair of fingers grabs his nose.

“The passenger has a strange feeling that the driver is trying to tell him something, but refrains from doing so because of the manners his mother has imbedded in his brain since he was little.”

Yunho turns to give Jaejoong an uneasy smile and wiggles his leg a little more. The huge white dog protests in its sleep by clamping its paw on the gears and Yunho winces, trying to weasel his hand under it in order to be able to shift them.

“Umm, so, Jaejoong… Where were you going again?”

“East,” Jaejoong answers comfortably, “why?”

“N-nothing, you know, I was just wondering when I’ll need to let you off!”

“You’re not trying to get rid of me already, are you now, mister?” Jaejoong enquires suddenly and narrows his eyes at Yunho, who gulps and tries to turn on his charming face.

“No, why would I do that,” he answers, but Jaejoong’s face melts into smile and he swats Yunho’s shoulder.

“I was just joking you idiot. No need to take everything so fucking seriously.”

“Eh… Okay,” Yunho answers unsurely, waiting for Jaejoong to take the initiative.

His wait is in vain. Jaejoong remains seated all satisfied and shows no sign whatsoever of ever getting out of Yunho’s car.

In fact, a little later when Yunho finally stops his Kia Pride in front of a small and very cheap-looking motel with a familiar blue and red neon-light sign in the outskirts of Gwangju, Jaejoong is still happily sitting next to him.

“So…” Yunho starts, unsure.

“So here’s where we’re going to crash? Well, looks decent enough,” Jaejoong determines, leaning towards Yunho to click his seat belt open. “Long time since I last visited one of these motels, you know.” The wink he sends Yunho is almost a little obscene.

“Umm, you mean, you’re sleeping here too?” Yunho looks at him with honest confusion.

“Yeah, why not? You’re going east, I’m going east; you need to sleep somewhere, I need to sleep somewhere, why not share a room? That’ll be a lot cheaper,” Jaejoong smiles and reaches for the door handle, ignoring Yunho who is almost choking himself in his haste to splutter out a protestation.

Jaejoong’s dog on the other hand raises its sleepy head when Jaejoong opens the door and scampers out after its owner. Yunho looks after the odd pair but when Jaejoong slams the door close, he shakes his head in order to focus his thoughts. He tries moving his dead leg and when it seems to comply, he opens the door and pushes himself up - only to fall back down on his butt on the car seat when his right leg refuses any form of cooperation.

“Whoa whoa easy there, young man,” Jaejoong calls out and hurries to Yunho’s side of the car to help him up. Yunho hisses and accepts Jaejoong’s supporting hands as the other man yanks him to his feet and keeps him steady with an arm wrapped around his middle.

“What happened there?” Jaejoong sounds genuinely concerned and Yunho almost feels a little sorry for worrying him like that - almost.

“That enormous dog of yours was sleeping on my leg for the whole drive, that’s what happened here,” he cannot help but to spit out a little bitterly.

“You could’ve just voiced your discomfort, you know,” the older man chuckles and helps Yunho limp to the motel door. By the time they reach the small hole in the wall that can hardly be called a reception, the needles and pins are pricking the limb with returning sense of touch so intensely that he leaves talking to Jaejoong and concentrates on groaning and palming his itchy leg.

Only to realise that the moment he shifted his attention Jaejoong started going all out with his bullshit as he lets the man behind the small window in on all the juicy details of Yunho’s married life and their scandalous adulterous relationship. Yunho desperately tries to attract the clerk’s attention as he starts shaking his head rapidly in denial, hitting Jaejoong’s arm and releasing a nervous chuckle, trying to indicate his friend is only joking, but he can see the young man eyeing the protective arm Jaejoong has around Yunho’s waist suspiciously.

“What on earth do you think you were doing!” Yunho demands in a hushed tone after he has paid the dubious young clerk and received their key. “What if they refused to rent us a room!”

“Oh come on, don’t be such a fucking prude! I was just giving him a little show, poor guy must be bored out of his wits in that hole,” Jaejoong chirps cheerfully as he drags Yunho towards the elevator.

The rest of the night goes down quite uneventfully: Jaejoong’s dog jumps on the bed the moment they enter the room, claiming its right side and refusing to budge no matter what, not that anyone really tries to make it move. Jaejoong makes no snide comment when Yunho drags one of the pillows and an extra blanket from a closet to the floor. He just retires to the bathroom peacefully, singing his heart out while showering to Yunho's great amusement. The joking and maybe even a little sarcastic comment Yunho has planned out carefully in his mind dies on his lips when Jaejoong re-emerges, towelling his damp hair fervently. The older man, clad in just a pair briefs and a worn-out Eric Clapton t-shirt, collapses on the left side of the bed and takes only a minute to fall asleep after mumbling a drowsy goodnight to his roommate. Yunho tries to do the same, but for some reason, he stays up listening to the other man’s gentle snores accompanied by the dog’s occasional whines for quite a long while.

~0~0~0~

“I do not snore!” Jaejoong claims for the nth time during the same morning, looking appalled even at the possibility. Yunho just hums noncommittally, as he sees no way his answer to what Jaejoong apparently considers a well-established fact would affect Jaejoong’s opinions in any manner.

“I don’t! How vulgar… My dad does though, and you know, even if I inherited all his other sleeping habits, it doesn’t automatically mean that I also inherited his snoring… No way…” Jaejoong continues his quiet rambling. Yunho thinks the way Jaejoong throws curse words around one would never guess that he’s put off by the idea of doing something vulgar.

“Okay, so maybe I do… But it’s more like deep breathing, right? And only when I sleep on my stomach!”

Yunho decides to gracefully omit the part when he got up from his bedding on the floor to physically rotate Jaejoong onto his back and how it had no effect on his snoring whatsoever, and just looks up from his meal to direct Jaejoong an agreeable smile.

They are sitting on dirty plastic furniture in front of a convenience store, Jaejoong’s white dog sleeping at their feet. Yunho is slurping down a warm cup of Samyang ramyeon while Jaejoong keeps complaining that his stomach is hurting from the mere thought of having instant noodles for breakfast and that Yunho should’ve at least picked a spicier brand if he’s really going for it. Himself, he’s sipping on a bitter iced Americano he has fetched from the closest café and when Yunho asks him should he not eat something as well, he just scrunches his nose and tells Yunho to brace himself for the whiny consequences because it’s Yunho’s fault he has lost his morning appetite.

Jaejoong makes a lot of noise sucking in the last drops of his coffee through the mint green straw and grunts appreciatively when the glass empties, then startles when his chest suddenly makes a beeping sound. Reaching for the breast pocket of his brown corduroy jacket, he fishes out an extremely old-looking mobile phone. Yunho is surprised to see a short antenna sticking out from its top right corner: quite a long while since he has last seen one of those.

Jaejoong places the device on the table and starts to press its buttons carefully with both hands hovering readily over it, each dab of his straightened index fingers causing a high-pitched bleep.

Yunho follows the performance for a moment before swallowing the noodles inside his mouth and asking, “What are you doing?”

Jaejoong’s orbs flash to meet his and back to his phone.

“Writing a text message,” he answers matter-of-factly, continuing his task with a dead serious expression on his face, tongue peeking out of his mouth in concentration. Yunho thinks it’s the first time he has seen a dead serious expression on him.

He follows Jaejoong’s operation for another moment before pulling out his own iPhone 3. He puts it on the table and slides it towards Jaejoong who glances at it quickly but doesn’t say anything.

“Wanna borrow mine? That looks quite…arduous,” Yunho offers, feeling generous. It’s not often his 4-year-old phone looks like a shiny new gadget, but comparing it to Jaejoong’s ancient mobile surely polishes its slightly shabby shine considerably.

Jaejoong raises his gaze and looks at Yunho, his eyes void of any expression.

“I’m not exactly friends with those touchy screens,” he admits slightly uneasy and presses send, pocketing his cell phone quickly afterwards.

“Come on!” Yunho insists enthusiastically, detecting his chance of making Jaejoong feel as uncomfortable as he feels most of the time they’re together. “It’s not that bad, look-” Yunho grabs his phone and sweeps the key lock open. Jaejoong stares at him unsurely, places his palms on the edge of the wobbly plastic table and pushes himself up the moment Yunho shoves his phone in front of his face.

“I decided I’ll be changing my way to a little bit more northern route,” he announces with an easy smile and reaches an arm over the table, his fingers curving around Yunho’s nose as he pulls at it. Yunho watches him a little perplexed, his arm still stretched forward, holding his cell phone up in the air.

“See you around Yunho-yah!” Jaejoong winks almost lewdly and disappears behind a corner, not before waving at the younger man for a few seconds with all his might, making good use of both of his hands. Yunho stares after him, and the dog that has gotten up to lazily follow its owner stops at the street corner and turns its head to look back, sending Yunho what could be interpreted an apologetic look.

A/N: So yeah it seems like I made Jaejoong technically challenged even though he’s the one with the six cell phones in real life… Sorry JJ xD But both YunJae in this story are so freaking OOC anyways that I thought what the hell, it fits his character LOL Even Vick is horribly OOC, all he does is sleep OTL
