I think 18 is the best time for soul-searching; possibilities are endless ;)
That can be a little scary, but it sounds like you have a plan to just go with it. People who abide completely by society standards, though they may fit in, might not feel as happy as someone who finds what they want while struggling to get there -even if that path is a little crooked and back tracks.
