Why?

So I noticed something today. Why do we all tell the teacher "Thank you" when we turn in an exam? Why thank someone for taking away our sleep and making the few prior days or weeks hell from studying? I was thinking about this as I left my Men and Women in the Ancient Mediterranean class today. We don't, not in Germany. At the most, I'd say the equivalent of "Here you go". Mostly, you'd say nothing at all, just hand it in and leave.

When in school, I used to thank the teacher when handing in the exam. I agree it's thanking them for teaching me something, I also always looked at it as the last chance I have to be on their good side before they mark my work. Most exams I had were essay based and not a straight right or wrong answers so there is room for the teacher to either let a mark or two slide or to take away that grace.

You know I never thought about that. I do tend to say that more often with tests that have essays. Hmmmm. I almost want to ask professors what they think when students say it to them.

It would be interesting to hear their point of view. If they even pay attention or if they see a pattern in the responses they get from the students.
