Why?

So I noticed something today. Why do we all tell the teacher "Thank you" when we turn in an exam? Why thank someone for taking away our sleep and making the few prior days or weeks hell from studying? I was thinking about this as I left my Men and Women in the Ancient Mediterranean class today. I did it. I thanked the teacher and so did a lot of others.

Personally, I think for me it is a thanks for teaching and giving me a chance to prove I've learned something.

Do the rest of you do this? If so why do you thank them? Even if you don't, I'd love to hear why you think we do this. Is it just common courtesy? Did it start somewhere specific? I'm curious.
