Why, hello DW/LJ. Aside from random fic posts, it has been a while. I am 1/3 of the way done with midterms, this first one being the most difficult to study for because of the sheer amount of material we covered, so it feels very nice to get it over with. The next two depends on whether or not I can spend hours in a lab or in front of a computer ( Read more... )

OH BOY

1. He is in love with Laurence. OKAY, DESPITE HOW HARD A TINHAT THESE TWO- I can at least say that Tharkay loves the idea of Laurence, as a person. He is very skeptical and pessimistic on concepts like duty and loyalty, and doesn’t quite believe they truly exist. They are ideas, yes, but he has yet to see them reflected in actual people without being distorted. This, of course, changes a little when he meets Laurence, who is not perfect, but comes very close to what Tharkay might believe that there are such people in the world.

2. Tharkay can be extremely sensible when he is not being bitter (which is, actually, maybe all the time, whoops). I think I wrote fic where I explain it better (though it is hilariously, Jane/Tharkay).

3. And I’m stealing this one from pel because he explains it so much better that I could: ”He is more emotional than logical. He just doesn't appear so, because he is very methodical in how he accomplishes goals and how he never shouts or cries or makes a ruckus. But all his goals are chosen for ( ... )

NUMBER FIIIIVE. That's actually something I've thought of a few times. I imagine his mother was fairly well off, and so was his father, and so while is knows about and understands racial issues, he probably has a blind spot for class issues. Again, in my mind, he contrasts Granby, who knows all about what it's like to be poor, but obviously has no idea what it's like not to be white in British society.

Also #1 and #2, I agree so hard.

TL;DR I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ON THARKAY.

Ahaha, number #5. One day I will write a fic with naive and wet-behind-the-ears Tharkay, and it will be totally heartbreaking. Just how I like him.

And the comparison with Granby is... well, I'm mostly thinking along the lines of 'WHY HAVEN'T I THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE?' Oh, it's totally true. Now I want fic about them bitching about it over a bottle of rum.

And, um, THARKAY DESERVES ALL THE FEELINGS. BECAUSE HE APPARENTLY CAN'T HANDLE HIS OWN.

B-but I like your beautiful face? Hahha, you can scan them if you want to!

Don’t worry; Malik is just that likeable. :’)

1. Malik is extremely temperamental. What he becomes furious about is subjective, but when he does, his fury is so immense that it sometimes overrides his sensibilities and rationale. This, of course, isn’t saying that he holds grudges or is quick to forgive, because that obviously isn’t true at all. He is inherently an emotional guy who has, with varying degrees of success, learned to keep his feelings in check, though he falls short when it comes to anger ( ... )

YAY.

And I'm glad at least SOMEONE thinks so. It's fun to take characters with little screentime and draw out these WILD ASSUMPTIONS based on every little thing they did. If Malik even sneezed in-game, I will probably deconstruction it and write essays about his potential allergies or sinus problems. :U

hahah, Malik can be a tricky character because we only see him in extreme situations. IDK, sometimes I jump from one portrayal to the next, depending on what kind of fic I want to write. (studious!Malik vs. snappish!Malik vs. idgaf!Malik) Personally I like the idea that he's very emotional, but prefers to keep his feelings under lock and key LIKE A TRUE TSUNDERE.

And do you do have a point about him being an intellectual foil-- though I kind of passed it off as him being too cautious by nature, rather than more smart. But, I mean, he's obviously SMART I just.. idk, I can explain it very well? lol.
