Why, hello DW/LJ. Aside from random fic posts, it has been a while. I am 1/3 of the way done with midterms, this first one being the most difficult to study for because of the sheer amount of material we covered, so it feels very nice to get it over with. The next two depends on whether or not I can spend hours in a lab or in front of a computer ( Read more... )

OH BOY

1. He is in love with Laurence. OKAY, DESPITE HOW HARD A TINHAT THESE TWO- I can at least say that Tharkay loves the idea of Laurence, as a person. He is very skeptical and pessimistic on concepts like duty and loyalty, and doesn’t quite believe they truly exist. They are ideas, yes, but he has yet to see them reflected in actual people without being distorted. This, of course, changes a little when he meets Laurence, who is not perfect, but comes very close to what Tharkay might believe that there are such people in the world.

2. Tharkay can be extremely sensible when he is not being bitter (which is, actually, maybe all the time, whoops). I think I wrote fic where I explain it better (though it is hilariously, Jane/Tharkay).

3. And I’m stealing this one from pel because he explains it so much better that I could: ”He is more emotional than logical. He just doesn't appear so, because he is very methodical in how he accomplishes goals and how he never shouts or cries or makes a ruckus. But all his goals are chosen for ( ... )

NUMBER FIIIIVE. That's actually something I've thought of a few times. I imagine his mother was fairly well off, and so was his father, and so while is knows about and understands racial issues, he probably has a blind spot for class issues. Again, in my mind, he contrasts Granby, who knows all about what it's like to be poor, but obviously has no idea what it's like not to be white in British society.

Also #1 and #2, I agree so hard.

TL;DR I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ON THARKAY.

Ahaha, number #5. One day I will write a fic with naive and wet-behind-the-ears Tharkay, and it will be totally heartbreaking. Just how I like him.

And the comparison with Granby is... well, I'm mostly thinking along the lines of 'WHY HAVEN'T I THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE?' Oh, it's totally true. Now I want fic about them bitching about it over a bottle of rum.

And, um, THARKAY DESERVES ALL THE FEELINGS. BECAUSE HE APPARENTLY CAN'T HANDLE HIS OWN.

I want this fic so bad now ;o; uwuwuwuwuwu.

I tend to see Granby as a weird narrative mirror for Tharkay. What Granby does and has, Tharkay has in reverse. Granby has too many emotions but doesn't mind being ruled by them; Tharkay has too many emotions and hates being swayed by them. Granby is better at manipulating situations rather than people; Tharkay falls prey to bad situations constantly but one of his skills is manipulating people. etc etc.

THARKAY CAN'T TAKE ANY MORE FEELINGS CAN YOU TAKE SOME OF HIS PLEASE.

Falls prey to bad situations because he manipulates people? dohohohoho. Tharkay you are so fucked in the head, ilu.

AND, JESUS, WHY HAVE I NEVER SEEN THIS GRANBY/THARKAY COMPARISON. I AM SO MAD AT MYSELF. WHY AM I NOT THIS INSIGHTFUL. Oh, right, because I'm too focused on Laurence-Laurence-Laurence. /headdesk

LOL, NO THANKS, THARKAY. I DO NOT WANT YOUR FEELINGS. THEY ARE ICKY AND DEPRESSING.

ALSO THAT. Tharkay: occasionally fucks things up on purpose, but only subconsciously.

hahaha actually, AR was the one who pointed it out to me initially, so I'm not that insightful either. OH TO BE A JEENYUS.

B'aaw, but look how well it turns out for him in the end! ALL PART OF HIS PLAN.

You ARE insightful. But Tharkay's pining for Laurence is very distracting.
