Personally I thought it was hilarious, I figured there might be wank about it, but since I don't interact in the Supernatural community it doesn't matter to me much.
I highly doubt they were really trying to offend their own fandom, probably just trying to have some good fun. This isn't the first time I've seen a series make fun of it's own fandom anyway, and it won't be the last.
Besides, how would you expect Dean and Sam to react to Wincest? It was completely in character and funny.
In general I think people in fandom need to relax and take a breather, that goes for just about everything online too.
It was hilarious, and it was entirely IC. And if I were the show runner of a show with such a fucking insane fanbase, I'd be making fun of them, too.
My problem was that people don't know what slash is. Your average viewer watching that episode heard that term for the first time that night, and first impressions count. Internet fandom and slash aren't familiar enough concepts to most people so they will be able to keep perspective when they're being confronted with mockery thereof.
Yeah I guess I could see that, perhaps it's problematic if people don't really know what slash is. But I'm not sure how much your average viewer would think about it... I spend too much time online to know. Damn internet stole my innocence!
I can see where it would be a bit of a sting (it's like they addressed something so specific and otherwise not commonly known that it felt like a smack in the face), BUT STILL. I'd take that smack in the face any day. Haven't seen much of that show, but the episodes I have seen lead me to believe they're a class act about most things--especially themselves and their fan base.
It was pretty hilarious xD. As is any interaction between the SPN fanbase and TPTB. I do get a little uncomfortable about the fact that the show dragged the injoke right out there into the open for everyone to see, but when I'm disregarding that bit, I'm lol'ing. Because if anyone deserved that smack in the face, it's SPN fandom. xD
Well, I'm pretty much IN the Supernatural fandom these days, I don't....know how that happened, actually.
*eyes surroundings suspiciously*
But the sane people (yes there are some here) are taking it pretty well, and unfortunately the crazy ones are pleased with themselves. Because everyone knows that any acknowledge AT ALL is equivalent to a hug and a thumbs up, amirite!? SIGH.
Methinks the creator, who DOESN'T have to deal with the crazy fans at the conventions, should have thought twice before writing some of that in the script :/
For what it's worth, though, I'm loling like mad :D :D :D and hoping that the episode has introduced some blossoming fangirls to the internet and fandom in general. C'MON IN BABIES BUT WIPE YOUR FEET AND WATCH YOUR STEP <3
It would be. Personally, I'm "out" about being a fan, meaning I don't lie about what I do on the internet if people ask me, and the amount of flak you catch when all you're talking about is the fact that you happen to think m/m sex is hot--even if it's in a conversation with a bunch of students who are making serious plans about producing a porn movie starring themselves--may have made me a little lol sensitive in this respect. >_>
I have been there, which is why I don't really out myself anymore. Hell, I've even just said that I find m/m sex HOT, without mentioning TV or fandom at all, and THAT'S caused drama. But at least it helps weed out the stupid people, even if it gets lonely :/
Gospel of fucking Winchester. See, that was the point I had to stop the episode. I was laughing so hard.
Hm, your mom may not associate the two things, but what if she finds out that yaoi actually = slash? I just don't like the idea of people unfamiliar with the concept being shown it from its most ambiguous side.

Not at all, probably. Except to file "slashers" with "pedophiles" and "rapists". :/

It has a habit of doing that, yes. >_>
All that said, I did love the look on Dean's/Jensen's face when Sam told him what slash was. Pfft. xD

ALTHOUGH it would be a shame if people thought slash meant incest. Because. Uh. I read both, but....yeah, that would be awkward.
