We've just had a good little shake - sufficiently strong for me to consider getting under the desk...

Magnitude 5.7, 9km deep, about 25km south west of where I work...

I'll always accept prayer, but it's not really necessary. If you read the shake reports there was no damage to speak of - a few items falling off supermarket shelves and the like, but no structural damage or injuries.

It was of a similar magnitude and depth to the one that flattened Christchurch back in 2011, but the geology this time meant that apart from a lot of rolling, not a lot happened. We aren't called the shaky isles for nothing!

Ironically, the parish priest of the inner city church was in a meeting about earthquake strengthening St Marys of the Angels at the time of the shake... With a couple of fires in the inner city area this morning, it was a busy start to Friday this week.

So there was a 5.6ish earthquake in Wellington this morning. It was a biggie, a longie and a rollie. It was the first time I've actually got under my desk for one, but the rollyness of it saved there from being any real damage. Of course Twitter went nuts for 10 minutes. The ride has got worse of late - we had a 6.5 shake yesterday afternoon which has effectively closed down the city CBD for today. $Wife & I were outside when it started, and watched the house doing the shimmy and the car riding a bouncy castle for a while. It was enough of a shake to move our bed around upstairs and throw a few pictures off the piano in the living room. The local website www.stuff.co.nz has fairly extensive coverage...

BTW don't believe this report as their geography has caused more than a few laughs locally - they have recognised their error now and updated the report...

(And that article is hilarious -- not only did they get the wrong country, they went into some detail about the incorrect location! You must all be getting a giggle as you pick your stuff off the ground, anyway!).

Well today (Friday) we finally got back into our building, to be shaken (a little) by a 4.2 jolt at 11:01 which was centred 64km deep and 30km odd in the opposite direction to the main shakes last weekend.

There is much cosmetic damage around our floor and one landing in the fire escape has a 1.5cm step in it where it has subsided, which is a mite worrying for some. However, ho hum, life goes on...
