It blows my mind how Neil consistently uses reported speech in the exact opposite way of how it should be used. Everything that would actually be relevant to the story or interesting to the reader is relayed secondhand, while the crap that was boring and pointless the first time around is repeated over and over in tedious detail ( ... )

That very much struck me with not!Simmons - it doesn't feel like he's being portrayed as bi, so much as his orientation being whatever the author needs it to be at any given moment. So he's gay when he needs to be offensively stereotypical, and hetero when he needs to leer at Jamie. A later chapter introduces one of his elusive "colleagues" who are apparently the people behind the conspiracy, and it'll be interesting to see how this changes things.

The undulating derrière deserved the first new tag I've made in quite a while.
