flying home from Phoenix

Sep 05, 2008 10:00

Deepest Sender (my LJ client for Firefox) locked up on the plane. The Mac said the free WiFi signal was still there (sitting at the gate), but DS couldn't connect through it, and it's stuck on an error page. (edit: I eventually had to kill the browser.)

My elder daughter is afraid of those auto-flush toilets (or rather, afraid it will flush while she's still sitting); she's getting better about it now (initially, she would all but refuse to use one), but she feels MUCH happier if I come in with her and hold my hand over the sensor, so there can be no ambiguity over whether someone is still present or not.

I believe a lot of desert places pipe their water in from Other Places. Like CA. :P

I don't know if it's a fear of going down the drain, or simply the surprise of the noise and water when you're not expecting it and feeling rather vulnerable (pants down and all). I know my big childhood fear was not that I'd get sucked down, but that the toilet would overflow and get me that way. Apparently I haven't lost this fear because, oddly, I vaguely recall having a dream along those lines last night. :P

But the Republicans keep telling us that "rising tide" is a good thing.

I keep forgetting how much haze there winds up being in photos shot from an airliner. The last time I was on an aeroplane, I had these wonderful views through the viewfinder, but very dark, low-contrast negatives (that a lab was able to pull some detail out of, but not as much as I would have liked). Could it be UV scattering backward off the air between the camera and the ground (since it's not apparent to the naked eye)? At the time I made a mental note to bring a selection of filters the next time I flew, but it's been so many years that I'd completely forgotten until I saw your photos. IIRC, I did have a skylight UV filter on then, but it didn't seem to help much. I want to try shooting BW through a yellow or red filter and see whether that helps. But I'm not sure when I'll be up that high again, between finances and TSA bullshit.

Does your camera have filter threads?
