You know how there are stories that you really, really want to read? The stories that push your buttons exactly, and you can see how they'd work out in your head, but you only want to read them from certain authors and with certain setups, because what you want to see is so very, very specific that it'd really just be easier to write them yourself ( Read more... )

Or the story where late-season, post-descension Daniel is captured, tortured, brutalized, but the minute it all starts happening to him he just sort of -- goes away inside his head

wow, um, are you sure you won't write this? Because I'd love to read, and read it written by you.

I'm toying with the idea, but really, I'd so rather read it done by someone else. heh.

(I swear, though, my version of Daniel is just flat-out orthogonal to the characterization in 90% of fandom. And I'm not just talking about the Cult of St. Daniel crowd. Much like the way my version of Sheppard is, um, non-standard.)

I've only recently got back into SG1 after drifting away in S5 and only seeing it occasionally, and haven't been reading fic in the last few years, so I have no idea what the general fandom characterisation is these days *g ( ... )

You totally can't say something like that without expecting a followup question, so now I have to know -- what is your version of Sheppard? : )

because really I think what I'm saying is that my concept of Daniel is just ninety degrees from the rest of fandom, and I'm going to get myself in trouble. *g*

Actually, I'm not so sure about that *g* That pretty much sounds like the Daniel I see as well, especially the first season pacifist fic - Daniel may be a lot of things, but he has never, ever been a wimpy pacifist the way so many people seem to think. :) Great plot bunnies!

I keep reading fic and thinking: pacifist? PACIFIST? This is the guy who machine-gunned a tank of larval Goa'uld in cold blood in what, like, episode 11? While the military chick stands there aghast at him. Daniel is a lot of things, but he is not a pacifist.

Daniel is also not: a wimp, a martyr, as good at pretending as he likes to think he is, as okay as he likes to pretend, or anywhere near as much of a diplomat as everyone thinks he is.

(And while I'm at it? Daniel is not as uprightly moral as everyone likes to pretend, either. Nor is he as open-minded as some people portray. Daniel is a cultural relativist, like any good anthropologist -- but he's a very, very bad one. He swings back and forth between 'it's their culture, it's their choices' and "BUT MY WAY IS THE RIGHT WAY." Sometimes in the same five minutes.)

*clings to you in solidarity*

Daniel has his own special brand of cultural relativism which involves him always being right.

*dead* Yes. Daniel is a special, special child. "You can do whatever you want! As long as I'm always right!" See also: every argument he's ever had with Jack, ever, since the dawn of time!

I can't believe I'm admitting this in public, but I've always wanted to read a long, drawn-out romantic epic involving Magus and Glenn (Frog as a human) from Chrono Trigger.

I'd also kill for any well-written Auron in Zanarkand or post X-2 (good ending) fics of any stripe.

And like probably everyone else, I have a host of obscure books I want fan fiction about.

because sex is just another expression of love and he loves them all

Have you read Dasha's The Four series? She captures the terrifying relentlessness that is Daniel with a Plan. Except that her Daniel doesn't stop with Sam:

Also a rare example of someone managing to write foursomes without anyone getting left in the corner.

Oh, Daniel. Forces of nature are less stubborn than you are.
