I adore your description of the unseen tattoo, and the way this is bookended with JD protectively curled up in sleep, and the hopefulness of the last line. Cam will take any victory he can find.

(And I thought about describing the new ink, but I realized there was pretty much nothing I could do to do it justice. *G*)
