Tonight I learned how long it takes to do a disease assessment on a diagnosis as vague as "stroke". The answer is "About two hours, if you leave out the minutiae and finer points." Blargl. Also, my med-surg book is ridiculous because is does not have CVA (cerebrovascular accident) in the index. At all. It's the medical standard term for stroke ( Read more... )

My previous profession was as disgnostic radiographer. When I qualified the training was slightly (ie 3 weeks) longer than for nursing and neither were degree professions - they both are now. Just after I started my mum asked:

'So, now that you've been doing this for a while do you really wish you'd been a nurse?'

My response was 'no way in hell!'. I really enjoyed radiography, I would rather eat my own head than do nursing (with the possible exception of A&E, Theatre or ITU - spot a theme here?)

My question - why nursing? (Yeah, huge pre-amble, short question, but I hope it gives some context for what/why I'm asking)

It's a hard question to answer. No one in my family has ever been a nurse. I really had no idea what nurses DID, except for what I saw on TV etc. But I swear, one day I woke up (back when I was working a job I hated and felt very trapped) and it was like all these pieces fell into place. I enjoy caring for and comforting people. I'm not afraid of the gross stuff. I have a cool head in an emergency. I've got a decent helping of common sense. Not only did it all make sense but it FELT right. That week I applied to the local junior college and get myself set up to start classes the very next semester.

I admit, it still doesn't make a lot of logical sense to me, and right now I'm personally going through an "Oh God I wanna quit I can't DO this!" patch. But on a deeper level it totally Makes Sense and I CAN do it. I just need to hang in there until we get to the good stuff -- med surg, mental health, ICU etc.

When can I see you again?

or, if that's boring, what's your current favorite song?

Well today's the last day of soccer season so hopefully my weekends free up a bit after this. What's your schedule like?

My current fave? Oooooh, I hate to admit this but it's "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga. It's stupidly catchy as well as being sort of apt for some stuff going on in my life right now. Soooo... I listen to it a LOT. Usually while walking to my car, just so I can strut it a little bit.
