I heard the other day that black used to symbolize life, because rich soil is black. It's kind of an interesting idea, and the more I think of it, that seems to make sense. Black storm clouds aren't really bad in terms of life, especially if there's a long drought. I don't mean like light and dark, I mean the colors themselves. I can't really

the thing is, I can agree with the white/black thing as presented, but it's been a natural human fear to be afraid of the dark. And light, as just light and not necessarily 'white', is a symbol of life in itself. Plants need the sunlight to live, and even the human body absorbs nutrients from it.
You could always look at the change of white/black to sociopolitical views; western culture has typically been engineered to hate darker skinned people, and using the dark skin to compare to evil would help rally the 'people'. Of course, it could have been the hatred of dark-skinned people eventually brought about the change. Lastly, of course, the antural assumption of fear of the dark could have changed to black over generations of retarded inbreeding in western royal families... i mean, um, the notinbreeding...
And as far as that goes, why do eastern cultures not have such a problem? Because Western culture has always tried to polarize and draw lines, where eastern cultures realize that good and evil (yin/ ( ... )

It's just interesting where symbolism comes from and how we accept it without ever giving it any thought.

Personally, I don't care much for whte or balck, they both seem... extreme for me. Although, I'll tkae black over white any day except days with rain on girls shirts. Then white kicks ass, lots of it

Seriously... things like "innocence" and "purity" used to belong to blue, but white took them over during the Victorian era. You don't see black going around stealing other colors' attributes, do you? Of course not! That's because it's the refreshing color of happy-fun-peacefulness. I likes black; it is cool and dark and safe.
And don't several cultures (Spain, China...) use red as their "happy" color? That makes more sense than white. More people can wear red and look okay than white.
*looks back* hmmm... I'm not sure how coherent I am, but it makes sense in my head, so I'll leave it.

White and black are symbols of yin and yang, true, but there is not one better than the other. I, myself, look better in black for I am a pale white. Just as people who are dark or black look better in white. Westernization didn't polarize the fusion of the colors, the colors did it themselves.
Nature did that for them.
*shrug*
White is a blending of all the colors of the rainbow in science. However, in Art, blending all of the colors in the rainbow will give you a dingy brown if mixed wrong, or black if mixed right. So, any way you look at it, Colors are colors. All the same and all unique at once.
Great references to nature and winter, though.
Love and Luck,
