Well that sucked...

We're okay. The house is okay. We were 'lucky' to get the weaker, left side of the eyewall of Gustav so all we got was about seven or eight hours of really heavy winds and rain.

Contrary to what the national news say Terrebonne, Assumption, Lafourche, St. Mary, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette parishes are the ones that got hammered the most not New ( Read more... )

4-6 WEEKS???!!!???!!! Jesus.

So glad you guys came through okay. I thought Bobby Jindal seemed very competent when I was watching the coverage. Still way too scary republican for me, but he did well yesterday.

LOL! He is that, but you have to consider the state that he runs. These are the same people that passed a bill a couple of years ago that said, should Roe v Wade be overturned, that abortions would be made completely illegal in the state. They also kept voting Edwin Edwards into office when they knew he was a criminal.

*shrugs*

I'm just happy we got one with a brain this time round rather than a weepy idiot (Blanco).

It's slate blue. She picked that one because it was already rolled into a ball. According to her, it makes it easier to keep the working yarn going.

I know how to cast on (which took me three hours to learn and get a decent enough row to keep going) and a really basic stitch. I can't remember what she said the pattern was, but it makes the yarn look like stacks of bricks.

I'm still learning what everything is called, but, for six hours work, I'm rather proud of my little square. Especially since I'm left handed and had to do things backwards to avoid issues with patterns in the future.

You're right, we definitely don't hear nearly enough about the areas outside New Orleans.

Selfishly I'm glad to hear that you're NOT one of those who was devastated by the storm or will be out of power for weeks!

we definitely don't hear nearly enough about the areas outside New Orleans.

IMO, part of that is because every single news crew that came down here for the storm was actually in New Orleans rather than the areas hardest hit so they don't have any film to show you. And, after the storm, the only way to get down to those areas was to go by helicopter or boat.

Selfishly I'm glad to hear that you're NOT one of those who was devastated

It's awful to say, but I am, too.

Glad to hear you're okay and that your power was only out for a day instead of the 3-4 days they were predicting.

You'll be happy to know that at least 40-50% of the time that I had the news on, which was a good part of the day and night, they were talking about Baton Rouge rather than New Orleans.

Also glad to hear that Jindal has at least some redeeming qualities.

Happy knitting!

they were talking about Baton Rouge

When we were sitting in the dark, hoping for info about power how other parishes faired, the last thing we wanted to hear was the NPR and other news stations going on and on about how hard hit New Orleans was when they didn't get the eye or the eyewall. That and talking about Katrina. How this storm wasn't as bad as Katrina and how we were all lucky.

As you can imagine, hearing that while sitting the the dark, in the heat of a southern summer, I was less than pleased.

When we finally got power, all CNN could talk about was New Orleans. Personally, I think it's because those tossers were all in the wrong area so they don't have any film of the worst of the storm.

Also glad to hear that Jindal has at least some redeeming qualities.

He is a bit...republican, isn't he? LOL!

I can't blame you for being upset about that.

And yeah, he really is.

So glad you're OK! Sounds like you had minor troubles, compared to your state-wide neighbors.

And it totally sucks that the only place getting attention is New Orleans.

And I know how you feel about your governor. I felt that way about Jeb Bush (former FL gov). Hated his politics, but when we had 4 hurricanes in 3 months, he really stepped up to the plate and was calm and reassuring.

I hope Hanna, Ike, and now Josephine leave us both alone!

Believe me, I know. We were ridiculously lucky this time. And getting power back this soon? I actually screamed I was so excited.

And I know how you feel about your governor.

The good thing is that the good old boy lawmakers don't like Jindal and he doesn't like them so they rarely get anything accomplished...which means the state runs smoothly.

I hope Hanna, Ike, and now Josephine leave us both alone!

Don't even get me started. When we lost power, those two were just color waves on the National Weather Service site. To come back online and find out they were named storms totally blew.

Looks like we (Florida) might dodge a bullet with Hanna, but Ike looks like he could be a "whole mess of trouble" for both of us.
