LJ Idol Week 2 Topic: "I Don’t Care About Apathy: What I "Should" Care About - But Don’t"

Sep 30, 2008 10:06

"They're having a gas shortage in Charlotte, you better check on that before you go to make sure you don't end up getting stuck there!", mom says with more than a hint of glee in her voice. What I didn't say, but thought quite loudly was, getting stuck in Charlotte would be fine with me. What I did say was "A gas shortage isn't going to change ( Read more... )

I'm 51 years old and my mother still does not see me as an adult. the only saving grace is that she is intimidated by my husband so she doesn't stop by unannounced anymore or try to say anything when he's around! Keep the faith!

I think my mother likes my husband better than me...or did before we came out poly. ;) Fortunately my mom isn't the "drop by unannounced" type, so I haven't had to deal with that, at least!

I can SO get the over involved parent angle... I'm 37 and my mother is an ever present force in my life...*grin* I have finally come to the place where I know how much she loves me and the kids, and so just take her statements in the spirit they were meant... instead of the interfering way they come out...

Great post!

Yeah, that's how I usually take her comments. It's the saying it over and over that really gets to me, though, like if she says it just one more time, I'll see the light. It didn't work when I was a kid, why does she think it'll work now? ;)

Oh man... I DO get that... I had an antique farmhouse kitchen sideboard on back porch, the old metal kind with 'icebox' below... I intended to refurbish/re-purpose it... but it sat quite a long while... She thought it was an eyesore (I thought it was interesting) and mentioned it in EVERY DAILY conversation from July to September until I got so sick of hearing it, I had the hubby move it to our storage shed... just to make her stop.

Now where the hell will I stick my charcoal, that's what I want to know!

I can't even begin to imagine what type of excuses she'll make when you and your partners all live under the same roof.

Would it be there or in your town? Cause you know she'll use the same excuses to not visit... and if she doesn't? Then you can subtley toss it back at her. Cause that's what parents are for... to torture when you're old enough to do so.

Aren't they?

Ultimately, the plan is to live here. However, where we live for the next 5 years or so is up in the air for a couple of reasons that we need to either work through or wait on. The only thing that's for sure is *someone* is moving next summer so we can all be in the same city. ;)

That's the downside to living in the same town with my parents, I guess.

I don't think it has a thing to do with living in the same town. My family is 3 hours away.

You make a good point. I was going with living in the same city because that gives my mom more access to seeing how I live my life and thus more fodder for criticizing. :P
