Because it didn't appear to be a joke at all. They were very nervous about it. Which means there's some hidden motive.

She came here dressed as a boy, didn't she? Sometimes, when people have secrets... keeping 'em becomes sort of a habit, so they keep doing it, even if they don't have to, strictly speaking. And some people do have enemies from their own worlds here.

I say if Juliet's really in that much trouble all the more reason for her to stay here with us. At least we'll know she's safe!
