What a particularly delightful score David Newman's Jingle All the Way is!!! The music sounds like an impossibly cheerful action movie; it rivals David Shire's Max Dugan Returns in its good-naturedness! While I tend to like Newman's comedy scores, this one is exceptional.

Hopefully someday soon we'll get a release of Newman's score for The ( Read more... )

I'd put it under comedy, but it's a true toss-up.

Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, who could build me a phaser. Which I wouldn't misuse at all, I promise.

Again with the commuting issues...

How did you guess?

Well, it was easy enough since that's why I want one too. I'd gladly enforce the death penalty for the inability to find one's gas pedal.

The best part is that a phaser would completely eliminate all evidence as well.

Inara vs. Rita Sue

It's a whore-off, everyone wins! That'd actually be a tough one to call. Inara got training and skills and all, but Rita Sue is tough.

And no, I don't think anyone really "dates" Faith. But, provided it wouldn't kill me, I'd like to try and stay on the full 8 seconds ;)

I was thinking more along the lines of an I Claudius style competition between the two. That way, everybody really does win!

As far as Faith is concerned, it's not about dating her. Really.

"Well, we certainly don't want to cut into that seven minutes."

I haven't seen I, Claudius, but holy hell that was hilarious.

I don't think there's anything of David Newman's I don't like so far. I don't have a lot, but my two favorites being Serenity and Galaxy Quest means I'll keep an ear out for Jingle.

And for the record, I keep it with my Sci-Fi DVD's.

Every once and a while I come across a David Newman score that doesn't quite jazz me up as much as the others. They are rare, however, and with an output as prolific as his, it's still a pretty impressive record. Admittedly much of the feeling of 'discovery' of his music is coming rather recently for me, as like Bill Conti, there wasn't much of his work preserved on record before.

I'm still oscillating between "sci-fi" and "comedy" - if I'm looking for Newman, chances are I'll be looking in "comedy," but on the other hand, Serenity is the only Newman score in "sci-fi" otherwise...

While the idea of the whore-off is an appealing one (my money's on Rita Sue. Inara's insanity might handicap her a bit.) I think that Mal vs. Belyakov is hardly a fair fight and I think that Sophie would be a better match up for River than Iris.

Still the idea of match ups between these two series is tantalizing. Other possibilites off the top of my head...

Iris vs. Shepherd Book or the Operative.

Simon Tam vs. Smith.

Also Badger vs. Stumpy in a "sketchy guy off" would be epic and disturbing.

I originally had Sophie matched to River, but then I figured we'de be better off with a batshit-off, and Iris is much more batshit than Sophie for most of seasons 1 and 2.

Maybe the Operative vs. Belyakov...?

Iris vs. Shepard Book would be... interesting.

And for heaven's sake, will you fix this!?! Is this how you run Chez Geek?
