What I don't understand is why OKCupid doesn't have the option for you not to pick any orientation at all. I mean, if you're there to make friends, why should your orientation matter anyway?

I understand why it is the way it is but they'd need to change their model completely for it to actually work for friendships. You can only identify as male or as female, for starters, and then if you pick straight they match you with only cross-sex partners and if you pick gay they match you with only same-sex, and if you pick bi they match you with both. If they included an option to identify as asexual, their model would probably interpret that as matching you with no one. So what they really need to do is let those check-marks for what you're HERE FOR determine what people you get matched with--for instance, I have a guy friend who wanted to make friends who were vegetarian so he could have more vegetarian friends to come to his potlucks, and that's how he found me on OKCupid, but it would have been more useful for his purposes if he could identify "match me with both for friends" but "match me with girls for romance" or something. There's also that annoying issue of how having two gender boxes doesn't work for everyone.

it is strange that people think this kind of message would be appropriate and entice someone in, like i imagine they don't even flinch or worry that their msg is insulting while they're writing it/think about that before they send; very odd behaviour, they must be narcissists.
