Drive-by comments, good and bad

While on my way to visit my mom the other day, I was riding my bike and some people in a passing truck called something at me out the window. Of course, I couldn't be sure they were talking to me, but it felt like it was directed at me, and furthermore it didn't feel nice. Some of you might know what I mean; I had no idea if words were even said ( Read more... )

It's really cool when something horrible is surpassed by something nice by a stranger. I'm glad that woman with the baby was around to brighten your day :)

You could always try 'America's Got Talent' - no age limit there I don't think! Well look at Susan Boyle she's 49 isn't she and that was 'Britain's Got Talent' and you're nowhere near her age so yeah.
It is crap how there is an age limit for American Idol, it's as if to say that when you hit 28 you automatically are unmarketable, that's rubbish and silly... wow I think even 'Australian Idol' has had singers in their 30s in the competition.

Yeah, I know there are lots of rock stars who are older than 28. :) However, I guess their rationale for "idol" type stuff is that they want someone fairly young, with a long career possible ahead of them, and it's true that most of the music that is bought is consumed by teens and young people so I guess they want someone who the teens will see as similar to them. It's okay with me that they open the contest for who they want to give a contract to, though it stinks that they're that close-minded.

I think it'd be hard to win on America's Got Talent as a singer, though. So many others to compete with! And Susan Boyle didn't even win on Britain's Got Talent . . . you really have to be so good to win as a singer!

I understand both circumstances completely.

And I think the second one is a bit sad in its own way in my point of view because 1) I'm past the age limit too and 2) I could never formally call myself a singer just bcause I never got an album, and less a best-selling album, released. Duh.

But I completely agree with sunsetcloud's comment. The age limit is completely crap and in my opinion should be removed completely, for the triumph of all humankind. They will probably finally see some others who also deserve respect for the talents they got in this world. Oh, but thanks to youtube and the internet in general, at least we can still reach out to those who understand. :)

I majored in music with voice as my instrument for a while, so I guess I could maybe be called "a singer," but yeah I have no contract either. :)

I don't really care that there's an age limit on Idol--I guess it's just that they want to give their contract to who they want to give their contract to, and since teens consume a lot of the popular music in the country, they want someone the teens think is cool still. ::sigh::

Yeah, but now that I come to think of it, I think being able to sing in front of an audience, either, say, in a pub, or online, somewhere on the internet, who appreciates your singing is worth so much more than a contract where you have to work for your record company and comply to the ways they want to market you.

Guys showing off for other guys is, I think, a source of a considerable amount of negativity in the world. I'm trying to think of ways they might show off to each other in ways that would be positive for others ("Look at me, I'm a gentleman! Watch me hold the door for this young mother holding a baby! Look, I was the first person to give up my seat for the elderly man with a cane!") but I'm having a lot more trouble thinking of instances where those actually happen. Actually this is something I've been giving a lot of thought for my story I'm working on...it's really sad.

But yay for other people throwing random positivity out into the world! It's great how strong an effect that can have, when it happens. :D

And I immediately thought of Susan Boyle with the age limit thing too -- American Idol is definitely limiting themselves. Too bad for them!

I think it's hilarious that you and me both thought of "wow, what atrocious grammar!" when dealing with something like this. :D

. . . Though I guess if I'm gonna stamp my feet over proper grammar, I should at least write "you and I." LOL
