This is what Costa Ricans call democracy

Mar 05, 2014 19:20

We had Presidential elections in February. There were over 13 parties and no one obtained the necessary percentage. So, the Constitution stipulates that we would have a second round in April between the official party and the opposition with more votes in the first round. Today, the candidate of the official party renounced to his aspirations. ( Read more... )

yay! I'm so glad it's turning out alright, things usually do turn out alright in the end. I was listen to a thing on the BBC World Service and it sounded like Solis [think that was his name] sounded like he was quite a decent sort of chap maybe who was quite fair so hopefully when he gets power he's do whatever reforming you feel like you'd want him to do.

There is a global trend recently towards democracy not really working/being very complicated, and an increase in Nationalism which is worrying. This never used to be the case, but I've come to the feeling that in my lifetime there will probably be another War in Europe. It's all lining up in the ways it has done the past several times with the storm clouds gathering. I was looking at London and feeling rather heart-sick, because it's inevitable that sooner or later it will all happen again.

Well, like Terry Jones said in Erick the Viking, we're terribly nice with each other. It is no uncommon to see so much fairness between Costa Rican candidates. Thank Goodness, we still have decent politics who just want to do their best. I know there are bad apples everywhere, but here, even the bad apples are decent. No crazy people with Napoleonic dreams like in several countries around us.
I hope common sense prevails in the rest of the world. We do not need another war. Anyway, Costa Rica would probably keep quiet and neutral, as always. So, if you need refuge, you can come here (I extend the invitation to Hiddles ;)

Me, Hiddles and Flullen will totally consider Costa Rica our bolt-hole.

I just love this! Loki trying to cross his arms just to look casual with the handcuffs. I wonder how many more Loki scenes ended up in the cutting floor.

ooo exciting news, Fluellen had his first day at work today! I am happy to report that he is setlling in nicely in his new job, it's the jobs of the dragons to guard the boundaries of the city of London you see, so Flullen has been learning the ropes from the lampost guarding dragon and the signpost guarding dragon and the gate guarding dragon. He's been doing a nice job of patroling the city wall.

I knew he would be going places. He's a restless dragon, eager to do his duty till the last drop. Beautiful pictures! Thank you for keeping me post

Could I move to your country? Just the very thought of going to war with Russia, albeit as distance as it is, is quite troublesome. It's good to hear some good political news for once. :) I hope the candidate that you vote for wins!

Oh, he'll win, the other one just gave up. Constitutionally, he can't step back, but his rival needs only one vote to win. The question is if abstinence will drop at all. We'll see.
Don't give much of a thought to Russia and USA, this is a game that will go on forever. No one will win and we are all losing already.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense if the one candidate is a shoe-in to win. What's the point of having an election? Seems like quite a waste of money to me.
True, but I thought the game was over when the Berlin Wall was torn down. Naturally I wasn't around during the Cold War, but I certainly don't relish a second one.

That's our Constitution's stipulation. And if there is a tie 50%, the older candidate wins. (that goes only for second round) funny isn't it?
