Cider and Perry drinking time

May 09, 2008 12:21

With blossom now on the trees and sunshiney weather making me think of sipping some very fine perry on the banks of the Wye, I wondered if there's anyone else out there I know who likes to drink fine cider and perry? I don't mean the fizzy, commercial, made-from-concentrate stuff like Magners, Bulmers, and Koppaberg - but real cider and perry - ( Read more... )

After my out of body cider experience at age 14, I can't even stand the smell of the stuff!

So... no :)

Hmm that's a pity. I would have thought a man of your fine standing would have enjoyed a glass of refined perry though.

Too close to cider for me! It does terrible things to me. mainly make me vomit copiously. Although I used to drink it a little in Aber, 'cos it was cheap.

Yes, but they have to be vegan. Then again, the cloudier the more likely that is, no?
Having said that, it take a mere tinysmall amount of such stuff to make me fall over and wriggle around in little circles of dunkenness!

Hmm I can't think of any real ciders/perry that wouldn't be vegan - they don't use isinglass finings in the same way that beer/wine might, and don't contain any other animal products. Well not as far as I know from the various cider producers I know personally, but I'll look into it further now.
Incidentally do you like real ale at all - there's quite a lot of bottled real ale that uses sea moss as finings so are vegan-friendly. Let me know if you're into ale and I can point out a few that are vegan if you like.

Bristol is very good for finding real cider by all accounts! Handy for Gloucs and West Country deliveries I would have thought.

Aye ... but there are a fair few casualities with the zyder madness ... then again the ciderpunk bands can be quite amusing, so I'm told.

Come and visit some time.

I normally prefer apple cider to perry, but at the Reading beerfest I found a really dry perry (normally it's a bit too sweet) which was loverly : )

Yeah some perrys are quite sweet - due to the sorbitol found in pears which doesn't fermet out in the same way as other sugars - but a fine dry perry is truly a wonderful thing. I may get ordering online tonight to stock up my fridge for sunny evenings ahead :)

Oh that is most excellent stuff. There are quite a few Asturian / Euskadi tabernas in Barcelona that serve good sidra - Zapaian, Sagardi, and other brands. I'm not quite so good with the pouring technique to 'wake the apple' but davecar seemed to have still got a good grip on the technique since he last tried it in Barca in 2005 - he managed to get a good height and the majority of sidra into the glass, so I was rather impressed :-)

It certainly is good - did you know you can get it in Garcia on Portobello Road? I think they have Zapaian for about #3 a bottle (may be more, I haven't braved Portobello for a while due to the crowds on a Saturday). We also got hold of some more compangos so we can make fabada \o/
